The North Chatham Free Library invites you to join a new writing group to tell stories that span continents. Many friends and neighbors have stories to tell about how they came to be in the United States. We will learn tips from experts about how to interview people and write up their stories. Members may come already knowing someone, but we will also have help locating people who are willing to share their story. Who are we as a community? Let’s find out!

The first meeting will be held on Sunday May 31 at 2:30pm at the North Chatham Free Library, 4287 State Route 203. The group will determine when to schedule future meetings and discuss ways to reach out to find newcomers or longtime residents who have a story of migration to share.

Facilitated by Julie Kabat and Bonnie Rothenberg.

Registration required.

In this experiential workshop, Sheela Clary of Shire Stories will teach participants how to find and tell their own stories and, through that work, learn how to help others to find and tell theirs. She has a great deal of knowledge to share based on her long-term, ongoing project at the Literacy Network of South Berkshires where she helps ESL students develop and tell their own stories in English. Sheela will guide participants through some tried-and-true story-finder practices, and wind up the session with advice on how to pass the skills on to others.

This workshop will be limited to 10 participants to ensure that each person gets individual attention. After the workshop, we will organize a new library group devoted to writing ‘stories about migration,’ based on real-life stories to be gathered through interviews. Those who have taken Sheela’s workshop will be able to pass her techniques on to everyone in the new writing group. Thus, participants will take storytelling skills they acquire at the library back out into the community, and even further afield when each member of the writing group reaches out to someone with a story of migration waiting to be told. We will find a way to share these new stories with the public. Perhaps new friendships will develop, strengthening community connections.

This Saturday at the Trolley Station : The Story of Plastic is a searing exposé revealing the ugly truth behind plastic pollution and the false solution of plastic recycling. Different from every other plastic documentary you’ve seen, The Story of Plastic presents a cohesive timeline of how we got to our current global plastic pollution crisis and how the oil and gas industry has successfully manipulated the narrative around it. From the extraction of fossil fuels and plastic disposal to the global resistance fighting back, The Story of Plastic is a life-changing, Emmy-winning film depicting one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues.
