In this experiential workshop, Sheela Clary of Shire Stories will teach participants how to find and tell their own stories and, through that work, learn how to help others to find and tell theirs. She has a great deal of knowledge to share based on her long-term, ongoing project at the Literacy Network of South Berkshires where she helps ESL students develop and tell their own stories in English. Sheela will guide participants through some tried-and-true story-finder practices, and wind up the session with advice on how to pass the skills on to others.
This workshop will be limited to 10 participants to ensure that each person gets individual attention. After the workshop, we will organize a new library group devoted to writing ‘stories about migration,’ based on real-life stories to be gathered through interviews. Those who have taken Sheela’s workshop will be able to pass her techniques on to everyone in the new writing group. Thus, participants will take storytelling skills they acquire at the library back out into the community, and even further afield when each member of the writing group reaches out to someone with a story of migration waiting to be told. We will find a way to share these new stories with the public. Perhaps new friendships will develop, strengthening community connections.
