We teamed up with Community Action Partnership (CAPs) and the Lake County Health Dept. to provide and promote Health and Wellness information to the residents in North Chicago.

The Health Fair took place on 15th and Hervey, and aside from COVID-19 testing, vaccines and other health info, backpacks were distributed to children ages 6-14 (while supplies last).

Hello Exchangites and Community!

Well…it is time to say goodbye to 2020-2021! It goes without saying that the past year has been like no other in our Exchange club history and because of that “darn” Covid-19, we’ve been challenged in many ways to stay relevant and productive in the North Chicago community. Aside from the pandemic concerns we faced, our club stayed focused and found creative ways to continue supporting our programs of service in the areas of Community Service, Youth Programs, Americanism, and the Prevention of Child Abuse.

Thank you, Exchange Club of North Chicago, for your continued support and commitment to the organization’s mission…Exchange, inspiring communities to become better places to live.

Now, let us walk down memory lane taking a glance at the highlights of 2020-2021 Year in Review.

2020-2021 YOUNG CITIZENSHIP AWARD
Young Citizenship Award

Exchange's Young Citizenship Award honors pre-high school students who daily demonstrate good citizenship both at school and at home. It does not necessarily seek to salute star scholastic or athletic performers. Instead, the program is designed to recognize and encourage youngsters who are honest, hard-working, helpful and fair. In practice, the Young Citizenship Award provides classroom teachers with an effective tool to further motivate promising students.

It also provides Exchangites with an enjoyable opportunity to supply the encouragement that can be so vitally important in shaping the characters of youngsters at an impressionable time in their lives.

2. Teresa Arias Sanchez (Grade 7)
3. Jeniah Harper (Grade 8)

Our Story

The Exchange Club of North Chicago was birthed by an idea of our Past National President, Lou Molitor, and Bill Froese. Both gentlemen approached the Mayor of North Chicago, Leon Rockingham with the idea that North Chicago could use an Exchange club. They explained to him what Exchange Club was all about and what it could mean to the City of North Chicago. Needless to say, the Mayor thought it was a great idea and thought, “Now, who could lead this club as president?” The Mayor approached Louise Loud and of course, she said no! He continued to talk to her and eventually, she accepted the position as the first President of the Exchange Club of North Chicago. They then needed officers and began looking out into the community. They acquired Sherry Murry as President-Elect, Lynette Hampton as Secretary and Teresa McSee-Odoms as Treasurer. They then had to form a Board. The Mayor would be the first board member, but they needed at least three others. Melody Bickhem, Theodore Wilder, Chief of NC Fire Department and Elsye Williams became the rest of the board.

On June 17, 2008, the Exchange Club of North Chicago was given their charter by the National Exchange Club. They held their installation of officers and charter banquet at the Flannigan’s restaurant in North Chicago, IL. The officers were inducted by Lou Molitor RVP Regional 3 National Exchange. The new members were inducted by President Louise Loud and their keynote speaker for the banquet was Judge Valerie Boettle Ceckowski. The club was chartered with 15 members.

One of the first projects that the Exchange club coordinated was the removal of graffiti from local allies and neighbor's fences. They were able to paint those areas with the help of the community.

Today, The Exchange Club of North Chicago has since grown in many ways and has given back to the Community of North Chicago through our Programs of Service; Americanism, Community, Youth Projects and our National Project; the Prevention of Child Abuse. With our youth projects, we have helped prominent seniors with scholarship funds and care packages. Our Pin Wheel initiative help brings awareness to the prevention of child abuse and the Anti-bullying programs give kids the opportunity to take the pledge to fight against bullying in their community.

I'd like to share a rather unusual, free, aces prevention resource...parenting tips bumper stickers. Advancing Parenting, a Camarillo CA nonprofit organization, produces parenting tips bumper stickers and makes them available at no cost to schools, organizations, agencies, clinics, businesses, and individuals. There are fifty-one in a set and each bumper sticker communicates a parenting behavior or practice generally recognized as supporting the healthy development of children. Just one will be read thousands of times! Bumper stickers are a unique and powerful way to educate everyone about parenting. At stoplights drivers and passengers point, smile, and nod. Conversations start up and often a phone is used to take a pic of the sticker right at the stoplight. Presumably, they are being shared on social media. It's wonderful to see! Sets of the stickers can be put in holders and placed on counters and tables so folks can select one or more for their cars. Visit www.advancingparenting.org to order this free resource. Use a computer...our website is not optimized for phones. Please share.
