Seaman Mia Carlson-Carter graduated as the top Sailor among her peers from Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, earning the Military Excellence Award (MEA) Feb. 19, 2026.

Carlson-Carter, 25, of Lake Ozark, Missouri, said receiving the Navy’s highest recruit honor was both humbling and motivating.

“Receiving the Military Excellence Award is truly an honor,” she said. “I’m incredibly proud, but even more grateful. It came as a complete surprise and reminded me that the discipline, the long days, and the sustained effort were all worth it. More than anything, I hope I’ve made my family and RDCs proud. This recognition motivates me to keep pushing myself, to continue earning my place, and to carry this momentum forward throughout my Navy career.”

Airman Apprentice Delorion Anderson graduated as the top Sailor from Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, earning the Military Excellence Award (MEA) Feb. 12, 2026.

Anderson, 32, of Huntington Beach, California, said receiving the Navy’s highest recruit honor was both unexpected and deeply meaningful.

“Boot camp is designed to keep you focused on the mission,” Anderson said. “From day one, I was pushed mentally and physically. My focus was to keep working to meet the standard and support my division. There honestly wasn’t much time to think about recognition. I was just trying to give my best every single day, and I think that’s why I was so surprised when I was told I was going to be recognized.”

Airman Henrry Hernandez Escobar graduated as the top Sailor from Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, earning the Military Excellence Award (MEA) Jan. 29, 2026.

Hernandez Escobar, 23, of Wallingford, Connecticut, said receiving the Navy’s highest recruit honor was both surreal and affirming.

“When I first learned I had earned the Military Excellence Award, it felt unreal,” he said. “For a moment, I genuinely thought it had to be a mistake. Then I thought about the long days, the pressure, and the effort it took to push myself every day. Once it settled in, it gave me a sense of calm. It reminded me that in the Navy, hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, and if you listen, learn, and put in the effort, you will succeed.”

Seaman Collin Truax graduated as the top Sailor from Recruit Training Command (RTC), earning the Military Excellence Award (MEA) Jan. 22, 2026.

Truax, 22, of Centerville, Ohio, said earning the Navy’s highest recruit honor represents the fulfillment of a commitment he made to himself years ago.

“Joining the Navy was about finishing what I started,” Truax said. “After my service in the Army ended earlier than I had planned, I was determined to prove to myself that I had the resilience necessary to have success in the military. This award confirms that my decision to stay the course and follow through was the correct one.”
