Cardiac events remain a leading cause of on-duty fire fighter deaths.
Four habits that protect your heart on and off the fire ground:
1️⃣ Move daily. Regular activity – even a brisk walk – helps your heart handle the intense demands of fire ground operations.
2️⃣ Hydrate consistently. Drink before, during, and after shifts. Skipping rehab and water breaks during long or hot incidents keeps your heart rate elevated and thickens the blood.
3️⃣ Know your numbers. Track blood pressure, cholesterol, and resting heart rate, and keep up with routine medical evaluations to catch hidden risks early.
4️⃣ Avoid to***co. Smoking and va**ng damage blood vessels and reduce oxygen delivery, compounding the carbon monoxide exposure fire fighters already face.
