Fifty-Two Years on the Roll!

On this day fifty-two years ago—August 4th, 1974—Conway Scenic Railroad operated its first public excursions. During its first two decades, the railroad's excursion operation was centered on the old Boston & Maine Conway Branch between North Conway and the Conway freight house. Today, this line is operated seasonally as the Valley Train excursion.

The railroad has since expanded, and today Conway Scenic offers a variety of experiences across two distinctly different historic routes. Since the mid-1990s, Conway Scenic has also run excursions on the old Mountain Division over Crawford Notch — today operated as the railroad's flagship Mountaineer, our premier scenic journey.

Conway Scenic's summer offerings include the comedy train Off the Rails on Friday afternoons, and the popular Murder on the Rails, running Saturday afternoons. Seasonal excursions include a variety of winter trains, including the Winter Mountaineer, which runs select weekend dates during snow season, and the popular Snow Train! excursions — 1-hour trips running weekends and holidays after Christmas through early March.

All summer long, the Mountaineer operates twice daily, five days a week, between North Conway and Crawford, N.H. Trains depart North Conway at 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

This Sunday, June 28, 2026, Conway Scenic Railroad plans to operate a one-time Flying Yankee Association Special fundraising excursion.

This special trip will support the Association’s ongoing efforts to restore the historic streamlined Flying Yankee train set.
The excursion will depart North Conway at 8:15 a.m. and travel to Conway, where guests will have an opportunity to view the historic Flying Yankee train. Passengers will then reboard for a scenic trip to Sawyer River before returning to North Conway.

Plans call for the use of the 470 Railroad Club’s historic diesel locomotives. However, Conway Scenic Railroad reserves the right to substitute motive power based on equipment availability and the operational requirements of the railroad.
