SHE TALKED ABOUT ABORTION WHEN NO ONE DID 💖 In 1957, at the age of 22, Gloria Steinem became pregnant while preparing to travel to India.

She underwent an illegal abortion in London. The physician who assisted her, Dr. John Sharpe, agreed to perform the procedure under two conditions: that she would never reveal his name until after his death, and that she would do what she wanted to do with her life.

Steinem dedicated her 2015 memoir, My Life on the Road, to him.

Steinem didn’t publicly speak about her abortion until 1969, when she covered a speak-out event in New York as a journalist. Hearing other women share their experiences made her realize she was not alone and converted her into an active feminist.

In 1972, Steinem’s Ms. Magazine published a bold petition signed by 53 prominent American women—including herself, Billie Jean King, and Judy Collins—confessing to having had abortions and demanding a repeal of restrictive laws.

Her honesty made millions of women feel less alone, and her activism saved lives 💖
