27th Annual Quarters for Christmas Toy Drive
On Wednesday, December 4th, the UMass Dartmouth Police Department and Dining Services proudly hosted the 27th Annual Quarters for Christmas Toy Drive in the MacLean Campus Center.
Our department, along with the incredible UMass Dartmouth community, came together to share food, build connections, and celebrate the spirit of giving.
Thanks to your generosity, we’ve already collected over $1,500! These funds will be used to purchase toys for the New Bedford Boys and Girls club, bringing smiles to their faces this holiday season.
There’s still time to contribute. Donations will be accepted until Tuesday, December 10th. If you’d like to help, please contact Officer Amanda Mullaly at [email protected].
Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this event a success! Together, we are spreading joy and making a difference in our community.
Honoring Tradition: Quarters for Christmas
In 1997, the late Dennis Tucker, UMass Dartmouth's very first Crime Prevention Officer, envisioned something special for campus, something that wasn’t just about crime prevention but also about community spirit and kindness. Inspired by local radio host Stan Lipp, Dennis introduced "Quarters for Christmas" to the university, creating a fundraiser unlike anything seen before.
The concept was simple yet powerful: students, faculty, and staff joined forces to line up quarters, end to end, across campus grounds to raise funds for local children’s charities. The first event, held on December 10, 1997, was an incredible success. Chancellor Peter H. Cressy kicked it off by placing the first quarter, and soon the line of coins stretched across campus while holiday music filled the air.
The campus community came alive with holiday cheer. Volunteers donned Santa hats, hot dogs were served with every topping imaginable, and a 12-foot wreath donated by Facilities added a festive touch. By the end of the day, over $1,160 was raised, exceeding all expectations. Every dollar went toward helping local children, demonstrating the incredible impact of collective generosity.
The event returned in 1998, growing bigger and better: more sponsors, more volunteers, and over 800 hot dogs sold! The quarters stretched even further, raising $1,672 for children in need.
"Quarters for Christmas" quickly became a cherished tradition, a lasting reminder of the power of community and kindness.
Dennis M. Tucker served as a University of Massachusetts Dartmouth police officer for 26 years. At the time of his passing in January 2000, he was the Department of Public Safety’s Crime Prevention Officer and Coordinator as well as the Day Shift Patrol Officer In-Charge/Corporal. Beyond his work in law enforcement, Dennis served on numerous university committees and organized several charitable fundraisers, including "Quarters for Christmas."
He also volunteered regularly at the Children’s Center for Learning, teaching children important safety topics. During his tenure, Dennis kept detailed scrapbooks with the hope of someday writing about his experiences on campus.
As we reflect on Dennis Tucker’s remarkable legacy, we are inspired to continue the work he started, building community, spreading kindness, and making a difference, one quarter at a time.
