We had the most AMAZING author visit yesterday with author Jennifer A. Nielsen! HUGE thanks to the Dartmouth Middle PTO and everyone who supported our Scholastic Book Fairs in the last year for funding this event.

Judging by the number of her books that checked out in the last 24 hours since hearing her speak, I think it's safe to say that kids enjoyed it! The writer's workshop in the library was highly engaging and tons of fun. The kids were inspired!

The fall book fair will be held October 6 - 10 in the DMS library.

On the book fair homepage:
Parents can make e-wallets so their kids can shop cash-free at the book fair.
Anyone can donate to Share the Fair to help students who can't afford a book.

The newest Dog Man (Big Jim Believes) and the newest DWK (Party Pooper) will both be available for pre-orders (any kid who pre-orders one of these books will get them on release day).

On Tuesday we held the First Annual DMS Civics Showcase in the library. 8th graders shared their projects with their peers and also with special guests from the community. We are so proud of student hard work and passion. Our guests learned a lot about what is important to our students and what they want to change in their community. Students, we hope you all continue to advocate for the issues that are important to you.

I am pleased to announce the top two projects with the most votes from students and teachers. These students will attend the Regional Civics Showcase at UMass Dartmouth. After vacation we will meet in the library to refine projects further.

The after school book club had a special guest yesterday... author/illustrator Cara Bean! Cara is the author of here i am, i am me, a graphic novel about mental health (she also lives here on the Southcoast!).

We have applied for a Mass Cultural Council Creative Experiences Grant to bring Cara to DMS next fall, but she was kind enough to visit book club to do some creative doodling with our group. Thanks, Cara!

We had a fabulous Author Visit Day today with Dusti Bowling. All students attended her presentation, From Story to Spark, during special areas in the morning. They learned all about her journey as an author including the importance of asking questions, doing lots of research, and embracing boredom because it leads to creativity.

Dusti had lots of praise for our school community, including...
..our 7th grade percussion students who introduced her at the first presentation of the day!..all three student groups who were kind, respectful, and attentive..the amazing students who came to the lunch and book signing, especially the one boy who crocheted her a cactus!..all the adults who helped make the day a success.

Plenty of (signed) copies of her books available in the library to anyone who wants one!

So proud of DMS!
