North East Shade Tree Commission We maintain a healthy urban shade tree canopy in the lakeside community of North East, Pa., by planting, pruning and celebrating trees. Tree City USA®

North East Borough, a community of 4294 residents in Erie County, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1804 and incorporated in 1834. The earliest photographs show tree-lined streets and a central park. The urban tree cover has always been a source of pride, with mostly sugar maples lining every street. Gibson Park and the North East Shade Tree Commission are the result of local residents' longstanding co

mmitment to trees. The Shade Tree Commission, chartered in 1965, is funded solely by the interest on a generous bequest. North East Borough has an annual budget for tree pruning, removal, and stump grinding, and maintains an inspection program to keep the remaining tree stock in viable condition. The Shade Tree Commission employs an arborist to advise and implement assessments. Dominated by the sugar maples, the urban canopy is being increasingly affected by two issues: aging trees and depressed economic conditions. As the curb trees age and fail, the removals required to maintain safety outpace replacement plantings. The Shade Tree Commission, which meets monthly, is dedicated to seeking funding for future plantings. The North East Borough Shade Tree Ordinance was updated in 2010 and is enforced by the Code Officer.

The North East Shade Tree Commission is currently taking request for fall tree plantings. A tree will be provided and planted at no cost to the homeowner/resident.

Members of the tree commission will consider the width of the berm, utility lines, any obstructions or other obstacles to help you select a tree that will grow well in your space.

To request that a tree be planted in front of your property, stop by the North East Borough office or call (814) 725-8611. Request forms and memorial tree applications are also available on the Borough’s website at www.northeastborough.com/shade-tree-commission.

In celebration of Arbor Day which is Friday, April 26, the North East Shade Tree Commission will be handing out 100 free evergreen seedlings during North East Community Agri-Fun Day on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at the North East High School Gymnasium. Stop by the Shade Tree Commission table between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and pick up your free tree which will be in a small pot and ready to plant. Trees will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

A member of the North East Shade Tree Commission will be on hand to pass out the free trees. There will also be information on planting, mulching and caring for trees along with fun activity sheets for kids. The Shade Tree Commission would like to thank the North East Borough and the North East Girl Scouts for their help with this educational Arbor Day project.

CELEBRATE ARBOR DAY AND PLANT A FREE

National Arbor Day is Friday, April 28 and this year marks the 151st anniversary of the tree planter’s holiday. In celebration of Arbor Day, the North East Shade Tree Commission will be handing out 100 free evergreen seedlings during North East Ag Day on Saturday, April 22, at the Davis Elementary Center. The seedlings will be in small pots and ready to plant, and will be available from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. or until they’re gone.

A member of the North East Shade Tree Commission will be on hand to pass out the free trees. There will also be information on planting, mulching and caring for trees along with fun activity sheets for kids. The Shade Tree Commission would like to thank the North East Borough and the North East Girl Scouts for their help with this educational Arbor Day project.

If you’d like to learn more about Arbor Day and trees, check out the Arbor Day website (arborday.org) and find valuable tree tips and techniques including, choosing the right type of tree, selecting a healthy tree, planting a tree, mulching, watering and pruning. There is also a large section for children and teachers full of interesting facts, fun games, and great classroom activities…all about trees.

As noted on the Arborday.org website, “While most holidays celebrate something that has already happened and is worth remembering, Arbor Day represents a hope for the future. The simple act of planting a tree represents a belief that the tree will grow to provide us with clean air and water, cooling shade, habitat for wildlife, healthier communities, and endless natural beauty — all for a better tomorrow.”
