NOTICE 5/7/26
Burning is allowed today with a DNR annual burning permit from 6 pm to midnight for a covered barrel, debris pile less than 6x6x6 feet in size, and grass or wooded area less than 10 acres. Any burning outside of these restrictions requires a special burning permit issued by the local DNR Ranger Station. If your burn will produce significant smoke, please notify your local sheriff's office to prevent unnecessary emergency responses.

Campfires, though strongly discouraged, are allowed if used solely for cooking or warming purposes, but please use extreme caution. Consider having small campfires in a designated fire ring or device in the evening hours to avoid burning under elevated fire conditions typically found during the day. Please note-- areas outside of DNR Protection and within the limits of incorporated villages or cities may create their own burning ordinances, as well as set their own burn restrictions.

Fire danger is very high again today, April 23, 2026, and burn permits have been suspended statewide where the DNR has fire protection responsibility.

Please avoid all burning until conditions improve.

Although the state received significant rainfall last week, the grasses and leaf litter on the ground dry out extremely quickly. Firefighters refer to this vegetation as "1-hour fuels" – in part, because they can dry out in about an hour after a rain event.

Fire can spready very quickly in 1-hour fuels with gusty winds and low relative humidity. In addition, northwest Wisconsin is still experiencing abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions.

Check any recent burns for smoldering embers and make sure they are cold as fires have the potential to rekindle and escape today with increasing winds. Moderating conditions are expected tonight with rain moving in.
