The Grand Isle County Farm to School team (HRC, South Hero Land Trust, and Grand Isle County Natural Resources Conservation District) put on a delicious community dinner recently at the Alburgh Community Education Center. 3rd and 4th grade students helped prep the meal which included cornbread made with Borderview and Darby Farm grains, chili with Happy Bird Poultry, and Choiniere Family Farm meat, salad veggies from Sandy Bottom Farm and Pomykala Farm, and Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Join South Hero Land Trust and Grand Isle County Natural Resources Conservation District for a conversation about conservation!

In 2023, the Vermont Legislature passed the Community Resilience and Biodiversity Protection Act (Act 59). The Vermont Housing & Conservation Board and the Agency of Natural Resources have developed a Draft Conservation Plan Framework, and are now seeking public input before the plan's finalized and sent to the State Legislature. To ensure that Grand Isle County voices are included in the final round of community input, we're hosting a listening session in North Hero on March 26th!

Thank you so much to Hackett's Orchard for hosting us last week!

SHLT is partnering with Healthy Roots Collaborative and Grand Isle County Natural Resources Conservation District on Farm to School work across the county, including helping to organize farm field trips for students throughout the year.

We had a great time with the Folsom first graders last week for a pruning workshop at Hackett’s. We learned why farmers prune apple trees and what the farm looks like in the winter. We got to see the many tools they use to prune, and watch Devin prune a few trees while we were there. These students will visit again in the spring, and then as second graders in the fall to see the full cycle!
