Central Virginia Incident Management Team – Quarterly Training Recap

The team recently completed our quarterly training, focusing on strengthening readiness across several key areas.

Members participated in a comprehensive training audit, ensuring records are up to date and identifying any outstanding or requested courses. In operations, we verified current contact information and confirmed Everbridge connectivity across the team. The planning section focused on updating member information within Teams and reinforcing where key resources are located.

The day concluded with a hands-on session featuring the Henrico Fire DLX tent system, where members worked through set-up and tear-down. With this system being adopted across much of the region, the training provided valuable familiarity for future deployments.

Strong participation and engagement across the board made this a productive and worthwhile training day. Thanks to Henrico County Division of Fire for hosting our team!

So proud of our team! 👏🔥

Recently, three Central Virginia Incident Management Team (CVIMT) members traveled across the country to Tacoma to present at the Incident Management Teams Association Symposium—and they crushed it.

Melissa Ahern (Chesterfield County Fire and EMS) and Michele Cosel (Henrico County Police) presented alongside representatives from FDNY Incident Management Team on Operation IMT Convergence: Designing, Building, and Executing Strength through Multi-State, Multi-Team Collaboration, highlighting our Smith Mountain Lake exercise and the power of intentional collaboration.

Bryan Miers (Henrico County Division of Fire) with a representative from NW Team 10 presented Bridging the Gap: Collaboration with NW Team 10 and CVIMT—Accelerated Credentialing, sharing lessons learned from partnering with NW Team 10 and building stronger, faster pathways to readiness.

This was an incredible opportunity to showcase the collaborative work of CVIMT on a national stage and help other teams grow based on our real-world experiences.

Way to represent, team—we couldn’t be prouder! 💪🚨

🚨2025 was a year of growth, challenge, and impact for the Central Virginia Incident Management Team.🚨

Last year, CVIMT focused on strengthening our capabilities and gaining experience on complex incidents. Highlights included hosting Operation 2025 IMT Convergence at Smith Mountain Lake—the largest full-scale IMT exercise on the East Coast—bringing together state, federal, and national partners for a week-long wildfire scenario that advanced interoperability and member credentialing.

In 2025, the CVIMT supported 14 missions across Central Virginia, the Commonwealth, and the nation, including EMAC deployments, state activations, regional mutual aid, large-scale emergencies, and firefighter memorials. Our team proudly accepted every mutual aid request received.

Training remained a cornerstone of our success. CVIMT hosted multiple position-specific courses, four quarterly team drills, three O-305 IMT courses, and several ICS offerings—continuing to invest in our members and our region.

Our team now includes 108 members from 22 agencies, and we celebrated 10 members achieving VDEM credentialing in 2025—authorizing them for national disaster deployments after years of dedication and task book completion. We also honored our Charter Members who have supported CVIMT since its inception in 2005.

As we move into 2026, our focus remains clear: grow our membership, develop our people, strengthen partnerships, and continue providing experienced incident management support to our communities—locally, statewide, and nationally.

Thank you to our members, partner agencies, and regional leaders for your continued support. We’re proud of what this team accomplished in 2025 and are excited for what’s ahead!

Last week, the Central Virginia Incident Management Team held our quarterly drill at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds, and it was a great day of hands-on training and teamwork.

🔹 Morning Session:
Team members became familiar with the team trailer and its capabilities, including operating the plotter to print large-format maps for meetings and briefings. Those products were put to work later in the day. We also trained on setting up and operating our portable power solutions (Jackery systems with solar panels) and the team’s Starlink connectivity.

🔹 Afternoon Scenario:
Using materials produced that morning, we built out a functional public meeting area—complete with large-scale signage, PA system, new monitors, portable power, tables, chairs, and other logistical support. In the same space, we established a check-in / equipment check-out and Operations Briefing area, again leveraging the printed products, monitors, and logistics equipment to mirror real-world operations.

A big thank you to Chesterfield County for hosting this quarter’s training and supporting our ongoing preparedness efforts. Training like this ensures our team is ready to support communities when it matters most.

The Central Virginia Incident Management Team was honored to assist with the Governor’s Inauguration by setting up and supporting a Western Shelter for use during the event.

Our team members arrived on Friday to complete setup operations ahead of the inauguration and remained on Saturday to provide support throughout the event. It was a privilege to play a behind-the-scenes role in ensuring a safe, well-coordinated operation during this important moment for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

🎉 Special shout-out and happy birthday to team member Doc Watson, who chose to spend his big day serving alongside the team at the inauguration. We’re grateful for his dedication and commitment to the mission.

This past Saturday, the Central Virginia Incident Management Team had the honor of assisting with the planning and coordination of the funeral service for Richmond Fire Department Firefighter Roger Myers.

Our team began preparing and coordinating one to two weeks in advance, working closely to ensure that the wishes of Roger’s family and the Richmond Fire Department were fully honored. Every detail was approached with care, respect, and intention, so that Firefighter Myers was laid to rest with the highest honors he so deeply deserved.

We take great pride in operating behind the scenes—quietly ensuring that Roger, his legacy, and his loved ones remained front and center throughout the service.

Please continue to keep the Myers family and the Richmond Fire Department in your thoughts during this difficult time.

With minimal notice, CVIMT was able to pull together a team to help support the funeral services for Firefighter Sammy Ershidat. We’d have it no other way.

Out of respect for Sammy and his family’s Muslim faith, funeral arrangements came together quickly — and our team was honored to assist in ensuring those traditions were upheld with dignity and care.

Our thoughts remain with the Chesterfield Fire & EMS family and all who had the privilege of knowing Sammy.

Central Virginia Incident Management Team – Final Quarterly Training of the Year

Last week, the Central Virginia Incident Management Team (CVIMT) conducted its final quarterly training of 2025, focusing on deploying to a locality and establishing a remote base of operations and camp at Camp Brady Saunders (Boy Scouts of America).

The exercise simulated operations in an austere environment, where internet and communication services needed to be restored to support coordination with the locality’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at the Goochland Fire-Rescue Training Center. The CVIMT worked to establish reliable communications and operational support while managing logistical challenges in the field.

A simulation cell provided real-time injects to drive the team’s decision-making and test response capabilities throughout the drill.

A special thank you to Camp T. Brady Saunders for hosting this valuable training opportunity and supporting our continued readiness to assist Virginia localities when called upon.

🔥 Welcome Home, Central Virginia IMT Members! 🔥

Our team members have returned from their training deployment in Chelan County, Washington, where they supported Pacific NW Team 10 on the Lower Sugarloaf Fire.

RC Stevens worked on his RESL (Resources Unit Leader) and PSL (Plans Section Chief) task books, while Mike Roth and Christian Kidd gained valuable experience within the Operations Section, building out their own task books and strengthening their skills under real-world conditions.

These deployments are an incredible opportunity for our members to learn alongside experienced teams, develop their capabilities, and bring that knowledge back to Virginia to better serve our communities.

A huge thank-you to Pacific NW Team 10 and all our partners who make these training exchanges possible.
