Friday Greetings,

• The North Kansas City Fire Department is partnering with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) for the annual Labor Day Weekend Fill the Boot campaign! Our firefighters will be out around the community collecting donations, with a goal of raising $6,650 to support MDA. Keep an eye out for NKC firefighters this weekend and help us fill the boot! Can’t catch them in person? You can still support the campaign through the online donation opportunities on the flyer.

• City facilities will be closed on Monday, September 7, for Labor Day.

• Deconstruction of the former Purina Mill formally kicked off this week. The former Purina Mill has been a recognizable part of North Kansas City’s industrial landscape for decades. Over time, the vacant structure deteriorated to the point where it was declared dangerous. Its location within an active railyard imposes significant limitations on the property's reuse or redevelopment. The deconstruction process will take place over the next few months. • The NKC Road District will be resurfacing roads around NKC. Here’s a list of the roads that will be resurfaced:
o 29th Ave - Burlington to Buchanan
o 27th Ave - Buchanan to Swift
o 25th Ave. - Buchanan to Swift (north half)
o 28th Ave. - Swift to Howell - one half
o 27th Ave. - Swift to Howell - one half
o Howell Terr. - 27th to 28th - one half
o Fayette St. - 26th to 27th - one half

All milling operations are complete, and the paving crews are working through their operations. Crews are also working on ADA ramp work in the project areas.

• North Kansas City Parks and Recreation needs your help! Take the Community Needs Assessment and share your ideas for parks, programs, and services. Fill out the survey at https://forms.gle/ojsMXGy5hdRJsC2HA.

• It’s block party season! A block party is a great way to celebrate and encourage stronger communities. North Kansas City residents may apply for a grant to host a neighborhood block party. Each grant will reimburse eligible expenses up to $400 per event. For more information on how to apply for a permit for a block party, please visit https://www.nkc.org/our-city/register-to-for/neighborhood-block-party-grants.

• The Citywide Garage Sale will be on Saturday, September 19. We encourage you to take advantage of this event to clean out your homes and maybe even make a little money in the process. The Citywide Garage Sale does not require a permit to participate. In the event of inclement weather, this event will be rescheduled for the following Saturday, September 26.

• Join us for a Fall Native Plant Sale on Sunday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Macken Park! This is a perfect opportunity to add native plants to your property.

• The City Council meeting, regularly scheduled for the third Tuesday of the month, has been moved to Tuesday, September 22, at 6 p.m., due to the Missouri Municipal League annual conference.

• Join the Community Enrichment Advisory Committee and MOCSA for a Community By Design workshop. This is a FREE interactive workshop that helps create safer, more connected spaces through smart, people-centered design strategies. The workshop will take place on Saturday, September 26th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the North Kansas City YMCA. Light breakfast and a boxed lunch will be provided. • National and state stormwater regulations require certain small communities to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. The City of North Kansas City falls under the Phase II Stormwater regulations. The permit requires that communities with regulated Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s) have a Stormwater management program in place. The City of North Kansas City has submitted a MS4 Renewal Permit Application for the permit period from October 2026 to September 2031. This will be an extension of the City's existing stormwater quality program. A public meeting to review the permit and updates to the Stormwater Management Plan will be held as part of a City Council meeting on October 6, 2026, at 6pm in the Council Chambers. Water Services will be flushing and testing hydrants beginning today and work will continue all week. This will take place at dead end lines throughout the city.
If you experience cloudy water during this time, please run your faucets until the water is clear. There is no disruption of water service expected. If you have questions, please call Public Works at 816-274-6004.

Reminder! The Northtown2040 Planning and Design Charrettes are next week at the North Kansas City Parks & Recreation Center. Session One is on Wednesday, September 2, from 9:00AM - 12:00PM. Session Two is on Thursday, September 3, from 4:00PM to 5:30PM with a Public Open House and Free Community Dinner to follow Session Two at 5:30PM.

These charrette sessions are the culmination of the Master Plan Community Engagement and will feature a presentation from the design team as well as hands-on activities for public participants. We look forward to seeing everyone there and sharing our passion for Northtown and the future of our city!

Friday Greetings,

• On Friday, August 14, the Police Department hosted the community at its third annual National Night Out event. National Night Out is an opportunity to bring the community together with Law Enforcement to enhance knowledge of operations and efforts to work collectively to reduce crime in our community. The Fire Department joined in the fun with a visit from Sparky. Photos attached, with special thanks to Photography by Andreas.

• The Police Department recognized several members of the department this week for their efforts that go above the normal day-to-day job activities. Officer Winger was awarded the department's Lifesaving Award for rescuing a person in crisis on the Bond Bridge before they were able to jump into the Missouri River. Civilian Thompson was awarded the department's Meritorious Service Award for her work in coordinating National Night Out activities for the past three years. Civilian Thompson and Officer Ojeda were recognized with the Meritorious Service Award for their work coordinating the transition from the department's legacy electronic citation platform to an updated platform. This transition will save the city over $8,000 a year in operational fees.

• North Kansas City Schools hosted its annual Convocation at North Kansas City High School today, as it prepares for the upcoming school year. We will be welcoming back our new and returning students on Tuesday morning – welcome back, Hornets!

• MoDOT is currently completing sidewalk and ADA improvements along Vernon/MO-1, from approximately E. 28th Avenue south toward River Forest Park. Sidewalks on both sides of Vernon have been removed in sections, creating active work zones and uneven walking surfaces. Pedestrians and motorists are encouraged to use extra caution while traveling through the area. Work is currently scheduled through September 1, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. • Last movie of the summer is on Friday, August 28, featuring GOAT! Movie will start at 7:30 pm in the parking lot of the NKC Parks and Recreation Center. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy a free movie in the park! Snow & Roast will have shaved ice, drinks, and popcorn for purchase.

• As North Kansas Citians, we are deeply connected to our town's history, but have you ever wanted to dig a little deeper into the history of your home or a particular building? Then the quarterly NKC Historical Society meeting on Saturday, August 29, from 10 a.m. to Noon is for you! At the NKC Public Library, we'll explore the many research resources available through local organizations. From historic maps and photographs to newspapers, city directories, and property records, you'll learn how to use both print and digital resources to begin piecing together the stories behind the places that matter most to you.

Northtown2040 Discussion Starter: Walkable and Bikeable NKC

Each week, we are posting discussion starter correlating to questions we are exploring regarding the future of North Kansas City. Participation via comment is encouraged, and if you find yourself enjoying the conversation, consider joining the Northtown2040 Steering Committee and join us for the planning charrette exercise in September.

North Kansas City is compact and built out, covering approximately 4.6 square miles in total area. This limited footprint means that most destinations in town are relatively close together, allowing for walking and biking to be practical and reliable forms of transportation. In a compact environment, prioritizing pedestrian and bicycle access improves mobility options and supports local economic activity. This enhanced access also strengthens safety and overall quality of life by making jobs, services, and amenities reachable without relying solely on a car.
