Did you know? Before NASA’s astronauts make their historic return to the moon in 2028, they train in the rugged terrain of the NNSS. Recently, Clark County School District STEM educators and Georgia Tech students had the opportunity to step into those same astronaut boots and complete the Lunar Surface Operations Course at the NNSS’ Nevada Space Proving Grounds.

After supporting U.S. security for over three decades, securing events including presidential inaugurations, conventions and even the Super Bowl, an NNSA Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) twin-engine Bell 412 HP helicopter has been retired and donated to the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History.

A key component of NEST, the NNSS-operated Aerial Measuring System (AMS) is a rapid-response fleet equipped with specialized radiation-detection technology.

At the recent 2026 Emergency Management Symposium at Argonne National Laboratory, NNSS personnel engaged in knowledge sharing, thoughtful discussion and collaboration, reflecting NNSS’s continued commitment to emergency readiness and excellence.

Participation in the symposium provided valuable takeaways for the NNSS, including practical ideas for strengthening EOC operations, improving technology readiness and preparing for AI-enhanced threats.
