📷 KNOW THE FACTS: NORTH LAUDERDALE’S LICENSE PLATE READERS

There has been significant discussion recently regarding Flock license plate reader cameras and actions being taken by the State of Florida. We want residents to understand how the license plate readers operating in North Lauderdale are different.

North Lauderdale does NOT use Flock cameras - North Lauderdale uses Motorola license plate readers, operated through the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) North Lauderdale District and Motorola Solutions’ Vigilant LEARN platform. The cameras were purchased using federal funds and no North Lauderdale tax dollars were used to purchase them.

🔒 WHO CAN ACCESS NORTH LAUDERDALE’S CAMERAS? Access is specifically restricted. The cameras are accessible only to law enforcement officers with cause. Access is limited to specifically authorized BSO personnel assigned to or authorized for the North Lauderdale District who have been provided individual access credentials. That means:

✅ Law Enforcement has access only for cause and must provide a variety of information before they can access the data.

North Lauderdale’s LPR System is an investigative tool only. North Lauderdale’s camera feeds are not placed into a network that allows outside agencies to independently log in and search our cameras. Authorized BSO North Lauderdale users must use individually assigned credentials for specific cases. When conducting a search, users must provide required case information and a specific law-enforcement justification, and the activity is documented within the system.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
North Lauderdale’s Motorola system is not part of the Flock Safety network currently receiving attention in Florida. Although both technologies read license plates, they are different systems with different network and access structures. North Lauderdale’s system operates within a controlled BSO North Lauderdale law-enforcement environment, with restrictions on who can access the cameras and accountability for how the information is used. The City will continue monitoring any changes in Florida law or policy regarding license plate readers and will keep our residents informed.

We want to thank everyone who joined us this past Tuesday and Thursday for our two Budget Town Hall Meetings. Both meetings were well attended, and we appreciate the residents who took the time to attend, ask questions, give suggestions, and learn more about the City’s budget process and proposed budget.

For those who were unable to attend, the Tuesday Town Hall Meeting will be available within the next few days on the City’s cable channels - Comcast Channel 78 and U-verse Channel 99 - as well as on the City’s website.

As discussed during the Town Hall Meetings, the rates shown on the TRIM Notice recently received in the mail represent the maximum rates the City Commission may adopt and not necessarily the final rates residents will pay.

City staff continues to work on the proposed budget with the goal of lowering the proposed millage rate and assessments while maintaining the essential City services our residents rely upon.

An updated proposed budget will be presented to the City Commission at the September 14 Budget Hearing, where the Commission will consider the revised rates and budget.
