Back-to-School Safety Reminder – 🚌🚌🚌

Welcome to another school year, North Liberty! 📚

As students return to class, drivers are reminded to stay alert for school buses, pedestrians, and increased congestion around school zones. Please slow down, remain patient, and watch carefully for students traveling in all directions.

The Fire Department has also seen a significant rise in the use of micro‑mobility devices such as e‑bikes and e‑scooters 🛴 around town. Recently, several accidents have involved these devices.

Many young operators have limited experience with traffic rules and lack defensive operating skills—both of which increase the risk of injury.

Parents, please review these safety guidelines with your student rider:

1) Always wear a helmet.
2) Stop at crosswalks and look both ways for traffic before proceeding.
3) At controlled intersections, follow all pedestrian street signals.🚦
4) Only one person per device. Extra riders affect balance and the center of gravity, increasing the chance of a crash.
5) Always stop for emergency vehicles and never pass an emergency vehicle that is backing up. 🚒🚑🚓

Today, we recognize and thank Lt. Landon Smith as he concludes nearly nine years of service with the North Liberty Fire Department.

Throughout his time with NLFD, Landon has been a leader, mentor, and dedicated firefighter who always gave his best to this department and our community. As Training Lieutenant, he invested countless hours helping develop our members and ensuring we were prepared to serve when our community needed us most.

More importantly, Landon earned the respect of those around him through his professionalism, work ethic, and passion for the fire service. His impact on this department will be felt for years to come.

On behalf of the entire North Liberty Fire Department, thank you, Landon, for your dedication, leadership, and friendship. We wish you and your family nothing but the best in your next chapter.

The North Liberty Fire Department would like to wish everyone a Safe and Respectful 4th of July.

Here are a couple of reminders when it comes to fireworks within the City of North Liberty.

Consumer fireworks are prohibited within North Liberty city limits except during the following dates and times permitted under State of Iowa regulations:

July 3 (9 a.m. – 10 p.m.)
July 4 (9 a.m. – 11 p.m.)
Dec. 31 (9 a.m. – 12:30 a.m. on January 1)

Please remember the following rules:

Legal Use: Fireworks may only be discharged on your own property or on private property with the owner’s permission.

Illegal Use: Using fireworks on public property—including streets, sidewalks, trails, parking lots, ponds and parks—is prohibited.

At 9:03 a.m. on Jan. 27, 2026, the North Liberty Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire at the rural address 3045 Forest Ridge Drive NE, Iowa City. A neighbor called 911 with a report of flames and smoke coming from the two-story residence.

A Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy was the first unit on scene and reported heavy fire conditions from the rear of the structure. Iowa City Engine 1 arrived shortly thereafter and initiated an aggressive fire attack on the rear of the residence. North Liberty Engine 411 and Truck 415 arrived soon after, made entry into the structure, and encountered heavy fire conditions.

A primary search of the residence was conducted promptly, and no victims or pets were found.

Fire suppression efforts were challenged by strong winds, freezing temperatures, and the absence of nearby fire hydrants, which required the activation of a third alarm to ensure an adequate water supply and staffing.

Fire departments from Iowa City, Coralville, Solon, Swisher, Tiffin, Oxford, and West Branch assisted at the scene. Additional support was provided by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, and the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center.

Crews remained on scene for just under five hours. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and a damage estimate is not available at this time.

No injuries were reported.

The team spend time repelling from the top of the University of Iowa Health Care North Liberty campus to be better prepared for rope rescue as part of training today for tomorrow's emergency.

Yesterday, the North Liberty Fire Department was dispatched at 5:27 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2026, for a report of a grill on fire at 1180 Ivy Lane. As the initial North Liberty fire and police unit arrived, active fire could be seen beneath the grill. Within seconds, the grill's propane tank became overheated and began automatically venting to relieve pressure, which spread fire to the building.

Initial arriving crews extinguished the exterior fire and then moved inside the residence to extinguish the fire and to search for occupants. The fire was knocked down quickly and overhaul operations took place inside the building until all hidden fire was uncovered. There were no occupants inside the building at the time of the fire. Fire crews also ensured that the adjoining townhome had no occupants or fire conditions.

Firefighters from Iowa City, Coralville, Solon, Swisher, and Tiffin assisted in the effort, as did the Johnson County Ambulance Service, and the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center. Crews were on the scene for 1.5 hours. The origin of the fire was the grill with the incident still under investigation. No injuries were reported and a loss estimate is currently unavailable.
