Potato Creek is in north-central Indiana about 12 miles southwest of South Bend. The park features a wide array of activities and facilities for year-round enjoyment. Making reservations is advisable to enjoy some of the facilities at this very popular park. A variety of natural habitats await, including the 327-acre Worster Lake, old fields, mature woodlands, restored prairies and diverse wetlands. Each offers unique opportunities for plant and wildlife observation. The area’s first people of European descent settled here in the 1830s. Halloween Happenings at Potato Creek State Park
October 24, 2026

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. PUMPKIN DECORATING - Bring the kids and meet at the Peppermint Hill Shelter for some pumpkin craft fun. You can carve, paint or drill into your pumpkins to decorate them. Make sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. $5 pumpkins will be available while supplies last. This program supports our Friends of Potato Creek.

2:00 p.m. COSTUME CONTEST - Dress up your kids and/or pets and meet at the Peppermint Hill Shelter to show off your costumes in this fun event! Judges will determine the most creative, scariest, funniest, best homemade, best group, most original and best pet awards. Small token prizes will be given to all participants thanks to the support of our Friends of Potato Creek.

3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. - CAMPGROUND DECORATION CONTEST - Judges will determine the spookiest, most creative, funniest, and most original campsites. This is a chance for campers to win a 2027 Indiana State Park Annual Entrance Pass! Winners will be announced and prizes delivered at 5:30 p.m.

4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. TRICK-OR-TREATING This annual tradition takes place this afternoon! Bring your ghouls and goblins for some trick-or-treating fun in the park’s campgrounds. Please Park at the Beach Parking Lot and walk the trail into our Family Campground. (Cars will be prohibited to enter the campgrounds from 3:45-6:15 p.m.)

Our interpretive programs are designed to entertain and enrich folks of all ages. Children under 12 must have an adult with them at programs. Registration is not required.

All our programs are free (unless otherwise noted). They are open to the public after paying the park entrance fee. ($7 in-state & $9 out-of-state)

All our Interpretive programs are listed in Eastern Time.

The Nature Center's Hours during October: Open Wednesday-Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

*Note that during peak visitation times, entry into our park might be delayed. Parking lots around the Nature Center can fill quickly. The Nature Center is located approximately 10 minutes from our park’s main entrance gate. Please plan accordingly.*

The Prairie Maze is back at Potato Creek State Park!
This year’s design outlines Lady Liberty’s torch to celebrate America’s 250.
Park in the West Lot and walk towards the osprey tower to cross the road into the prairie.

Let the Zoo come to you at Potato Creek State Park. Join us on Sunday, August 9, 2026 from 3-4pm EDT at the Nature Center Auditorium to meet some ambassador animals. Please come and enjoy this fun and educational event.

Indiana State Parks is so lucky that a group of artists chose to celebrate America's 250th by painting platters with images of 25 state parks. These fine china pieces were hand-painted by artists Glenda Abbert, Sandra Kukman, Linda Lane, Sherry Hoefling, C.J. Laster, Cindy Wiltermood, Joyce Dwulet and Ellen Wilson-Pruitt.

We'll post a few pictures each day.

The collection will tour the state at the following locations:
July 3-5, 2026 - America 250 Celebration, Downtown Indianapolis
July 6-24, 2026 - Dubois Co. Museum, Jasper w/program July 11
Aug. 7-23, 2026 - Indiana State Fair, Fine Arts Building and the DNR Building
