FAQ: Is k**b and tube wiring safe?

If your home was built before 1945, there’s a good chance it has k**b and tube wiring — and it’s worth knowing what that means.

The wire itself isn’t usually the problem. The problems are what came after it. K**b and tube has no ground, which means no three-prong outlets and no surge protection. It was designed to shed heat into open air, so it can’t be buried in attic or wall insulation. Most homes on k**b and tube have too few circuits for how people live now, and decades of overfusing and homeowner splices are common.

Condition varies a lot from house to house. It’s not automatically a disaster, but it should be evaluated. Some homeowners find out they have it when an insurance carrier or home inspector flags it.
