This is Richelle Brittain, formerly president of AFUNS. Since Kwami Abdul-Bey set me up as the admin of this page back in 2021, I have chosen to quietly maintain it essentially in case of emergency, even though AFUNS is no more. I believe that time is NOW. 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨

After 8:30 this last evening, almost literally in the dead of night, the House State Agencies Committee gave a "do pass" to SB569, the very bill described in the post Arkansas Public Policy Panel made here earlier today. APPP head Bill Kopsky spoke against it, but the committee wouldn't listen. It will be on the House's agenda at 9 AM this morning, the last scheduled day of the legislative session. If it gets House approval by 2/3rds majority, it goes to the Governor; I fully expect she will sign it.

In my opinion this is arguably the MOST DANGEROUS legislation ever considered by the General Assembly (and we've seen some doozies, especially in the trans community which I'm a part of), not so much for WHAT it does as HOW it does it. Essentially, the bill asserts that the legislature can amend or repeal ANY amendment to the AR Constitution -- and by extension, almost ANY part of the Constitution itself -- by 2/3rds majority vote, WITHOUT going to the people for approval as the Constitution supposedly requires. THAT is absolute power, and as the old maxim says, it corrupts ABSOLUTELY.

Please call your state representative IMMEDIATELY at (501) 682-6211, or email them directly. Tell them SB569 is perhaps the WORST bill EVER to come out of the legislature and needs to be DEFEATED. It's possible as we only need 34 representatives voting ANYTHING other than "yes" (even "present" or not voting at all is effectively a "no") to stop this blatantly unconstitutional power grab. If this goes thru, not only will this go to court; I personally intend to dust off the lost 1912 recall amendment to the Constitution and try to have EVERY legislator who voted for it thrown out of office BEFORE the next election if possible. 👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹

In case you're wanting to go to the local simulcast of the Daisy Bates statue unveiling -- especially if you're white like me (Black folks probably figured it out) -- it's at the Second Baptist Church on John Barrow, NOT downtown. Earlier announcements didn't make it clear which church was hosting it.

If you can't make it, a livestream has been set up on a House YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlYtJzuYPnY I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up on C-SPAN as well, though not everyone gets that anymore (I now use YouTube TV which doesn't have it).

A statue of Daisy Gatson Bates will be unveiled in the National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol on May 8, according to the Arkansas Secretary of State's of...

Dear fellow Arkansans. Our Governor has called a special session to decrease taxes. People will be for or against that, and that's not my concern.

However, she has also called this special session to try to gut our FOIA laws. FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) laws are used to hold lawmakers accountable for their actions by making those actions more transparent. Any Arkansas, yes, even you, can submit a FOIA request to Arkansas government agencies to demand information about many things, including how they are spending your tax dollars.

Last legislative session, there were a bunch of proposed bills to narrow what Arkansans are allowed to ask for under FOIA. Most of them failed, due to the fact that Arkansas has some of the strongest FOIA laws in the nation, and Democrats and Republicans have historically supported this transparency. That happened in the last session. Most, if not all, the bills failed because of the votes against them by Democrats and Republicans.

Now, some people have been questioning the costs of many plane trips that Governor Sanders has taken. The Arkansas State Police are in charge of the actions, protocols, and spending of these plane trips. Matt Campbell, who is an expert in Arkansas' FOIA laws, attempted to get information about her past plane trips that appear to be questionable. I don't know all the ins and outs of this, but I believe one example is that she took the plane to Fayetteville, then got back on the plane to fly to Rogers, which is a short distance from Fayetteville. Was this right or wrong? I'm not sure. However, what is wrong is that the ASP have been trying to block fulfilling Campbell's FOIA requests for reasons of Governor's Sander's safety, and the safety of her family. This seems to be appropriate for FUTURE trips, but not for PAST trips. Apparently, they are also blocking Campbell's attempts to FOIA the other passengers on that flight. Is that right or wrong? I can't say for sure. Campbell is currently suing the ASP to get those records, so we will see how that turns out.

However, now Governor Sanders has called this special legislative session and not only does she want FOIA to say that asking for any of this flight information will no longer be allowed, but she wants to make the bill retroactive to the beginning of 2022. This means that none of her flights since she became Governor would be FOIAable (not a real word).

The only things we as Arkansans can do about this right now is to write our legislators, to either ask them how they view the bill, or how they plan to vote on it. If you feel that this bill should not be passed, please tell them that, and ask them to vote against this bill.
