The Strength Maintenance Training Battalion (SMTB) trains the Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Force encompassing recruiting, retention and attrition management. Congratulations to 1SG Dustin Faulkner on assuming responsibility as the Deputy Commandant of the 79T NCO Academy during yesterday’s Change of Responsibility ceremony at the Professional Education Center (PEC).

The ceremony also recognized MSG Sean Griffin as he relinquished responsibility in front of family, friends, and fellow Soldiers after faithfully serving the Academy and its students.

A First Sergeant plays a critical role in developing Soldiers, enforcing standards, mentoring leaders, and ensuring the overall readiness and welfare of the formation. As Deputy Commandant, 1SG Faulkner will help shape and teach future Recruiting and Retention senior leaders while continuing to lead from the front with professionalism and experience.

Thank you, MSG Griffin, for your leadership and dedication to the force, and congratulations to 1SG Faulkner as he takes on this important responsibility.

3rd Platoon of Non Career Recruiter Course 26-005/006 demonstrated what it means to learn with purpose and lead with professionalism.

During their time at SMTB, these Soldiers developed recruiting and communication skills designed to help them better connect with future Guardsmen and share opportunities within the Army National Guard. From classroom discussions to practical exercises, the focus remained on building confident and capable RRNCOs ready to return to the field.

Now back in their states, 3rd Platoon continues the mission by sharing the Guard Story and strengthening recruiting efforts one conversation at a time.

🎓 Senior Leader Course 26-006 Graduates 🎓

One week ago, the Soldiers of Senior Leader Course 26-006 graduated from SMTB and returned to their states and units prepared to lead at a higher level.

During the ceremony, guest speaker Robert C. Gehres III challenged the graduates to wake up each day and be excellent—not only to themselves, but to those around them. Excellence is not an accident; it is a choice. It is found in the daily decisions leaders make to set the standard, care for their Soldiers, and positively influence their teams.

As these NCOs move forward, they carry with them the lessons learned, relationships built, and leadership principles reinforced throughout the course. The impact of SLC is measured not by graduation day, but by how graduates apply what they have learned to strengthen their units and develop the next generation of leaders.

Congratulations to the Soldiers of Non-Career Recruiting Course (NCR) 26-005/006 on your successful graduation from the Strength Maintenance Training Battalion!

Over the past several weeks, these Recruiting and Retention NCOs have challenged themselves, sharpened their communication skills, strengthened their prospecting techniques, and developed the tools needed to make a lasting impact in their states and territories. The lessons learned here are only the beginning.

A special thank you to our guest speaker, Edwardo Herrera, for sharing his insight, experience, and encouragement with the graduating class.

As you return to the field, remember that every conversation is an opportunity, every lead is a potential future Soldier, and every community engagement strengthens the Army National Guard. Non Career Recruiter Course 26-005/006, 5th Platoon, worked through the process of establishing an RRNCO Work Plan. Using strategies and information from classroom instruction, students practiced building plans focused on short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals to support mission success back in their states.

The exercise challenged students to think critically about time management, prioritization, and how effective planning impacts recruiting and retention operations in the field. Discussions centered on creating realistic and actionable plans that can be implemented immediately upon returning to their units.
Strong planning builds disciplined ex*****on, and these future leaders continue sharpening the skills needed to lead from the front.

Behind the scenes at Guard-X. Non Career Recruiting and Retention (NCR) Course 26-005/006 students put their recruiting skills to the test during sales training evaluations focused on interviewing prospective applicants.

Through realistic roleplay scenarios, instructors acted as prospects while students stepped into the role of the Recruiting and Retention NCO (RRNCO). These evaluations challenged students to apply communication skills, build rapport, overcome objections, and conduct professional interviews in a fast-paced environment that mirrors real-world recruiting.

Training like this prepares our Soldiers to return to their states with the confidence, adaptability, and professionalism needed to positively impact recruiting efforts across the Army National Guard.

The lessons learned here at SMTB do not stay in the classroom: they go back to the field to strengthen teams, improve engagement, and help build the future force.

Senior Leader Course (SLC) 26-006 put leadership into action as they worked together during a breakout session focused on evaluating the components of the Army Enlistment Promotion Board. Through collaboration, discussion, and shared experience, students developed their approach for assessing a mock promotion board.

Exercises like this sharpen communication, critical thinking, and leader development while reinforcing the responsibility NCOs have in shaping the next generation of Soldiers. The teamwork and professionalism displayed during these sessions continue to build stronger leaders prepared to bring knowledge and experience back to their formations.
