It's Flashback Friday time again. This week we want to highlight the Dark Hollow community which is home base for lots of great people!

Lee and Ava Hervey were relaxing in their swings at home on East 15th Street when Crystal Huie took this photograph about 1970. Lee Hervey worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad.

Huie photographed numerous people in the Dark Hollow neighborhood, where he grew up at 14th and Pine. His parents, George D.D. and Helen Huie, were Chinese immigrants who owned a grocery store. Crystal Huie graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1959. After serving in the U.S. Army, he studied photography at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. In 1972, he moved to San Francisco, where he was part of the Kearny Street Workshop, an Asian American art collective located on the edge of Chinatown.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. has 23 of Huie’s Dark Hollow photographs in its collection. Curtis Sykes donated 42 original black-and-white prints of Huie’s Dark Hollow photos to the North Little Rock History Commission. Huie died in December 2022 in San Francisco.
