NMPL Announces New Reciprocal Partnership With the Akron Carnegie Public Library

The North Manchester Public Library (NMPL) is delighted to announce a new Local Reciprocal Borrowing Covenant with the Akron Carnegie Public Library, effective May 11th. Located in the heart of Akron, the Akron Carnegie Public Library serves its community with a welcoming space, a rich collection, and a wide range of programs for all ages.

With this new partnership, NMPL cardholders - both resident and non‑resident - can now sign up for a free library card at Akron, and Akron patrons can do the same at NMPL. This agreement joins NMPL’s existing reciprocal partnerships with Roann Paw Paw Township Public Library, South Whitley Community Public Library, North Webster Community Public Library - North Webster, Indiana, Wabash Carnegie Public Library, and the Huntington City-Township Public Library, bringing the total to seven libraries that NMPL patrons can access.

Expanding reciprocal access is a key part of NMPL’s long‑range plan to strengthen regional collaboration and increase the value of library services for the community. Library Director Andrea Zwiebel notes that these partnerships “reflect our commitment to building connections that make library resources more accessible for everyone. Each new covenant supports our long‑range plan by expanding opportunities for learning, exploration, and community engagement across our region.”

This initiative also provides significant added value for non‑resident patrons. While resident patrons receive their NMPL card through the taxes they already pay, non‑resident patrons make a personal choice to purchase a card each year. The annual non‑resident fee is set by the Indiana State Library and approved by the NMPL Board, and NMPL has worked intentionally to ensure that investment goes further. With this new covenant, non‑resident patrons now receive access to seven libraries for the price of one, dramatically expanding the materials, programs, and services available to them.

Patrons interested in becoming reciprocal users simply need to bring their home library card and a valid ID or proof of address to the partner library. As with NMPL’s other reciprocal agreements, a few restrictions apply: reciprocal patrons cannot borrow Inter‑Library Loan materials or check out hotspots.

Adult Department Manager Jeanna Hann shared that this expansion is part of NMPL’s ongoing effort to meet the evolving needs of the community. “We’re continually looking for ways to bridge service gaps and make sure every library user has access to the resources that matter to them. Adding Akron to our reciprocal network gives our patrons even more places to read, learn, and feel supported.”

Our Escape Room Experience officially launched yesterday, and our first two groups have tackled the challenge!

Our first team dove right into the mystery of Iris Baughman’s stolen diary, working through clues, codes, and Sammy the Interviewing Toucan’s tricks. They just missed solving it within the allotted time, as you can clearly see from their faces in the (staged) photo! But the kids said they had a great time - and they particularly enjoyed the snacks they were given at the end!

Our second group came in ready for a challenge and managed to crack the case in just 55 minutes, giving us a brand‑new time to beat. Even the babies in the group helped by finding puzzle pieces hidden around the room, so it was a true team effort!

This escape room is such a fun blend of genealogy, local history, and puzzle‑solving, and we want to invite you to take part! We still have a few openings left, so sign up here asap!: https://events.in.gov/event/escape-room-genealogy-and-the-1904-diary?utm_campaign=widget&utm_medium=widget&utm_source=State+of+Indiana

Thanks to the Indiana State Library for providing this experience for our patrons - we're having such a great time!

Spotlight On: Midnight Flyboys: The American Bomber Crews and Allied Secret Agents Who Aided the French Resistance in World War II by Bruce Henderson

"The untold history of a top-secret operation in the run-up to D-Day in which American flyers and Allied spies carried out some of the most daring cloak-and-dagger operations of World War II.

In 1943, the OSS—precursor to the CIA—came up with a plan to increase its support to the French resistance forces that were fighting the N***s. To start, the OSS recruited some of the best American bomber pilots and crews to a secret airfield twenty miles west of London and briefed them on the intended mission. Given a choice to stay or leave, every airman volunteered for what became known as Operation Carpetbagger.

Their dangerous plan called for a new kind of flying: taking their B-24 Liberator bombers in the middle of the night across the English Channel and down to extremely low altitudes in Nazi-occupied France to find drop zones in dark fields. On the ground, resistance members waited to receive steel containers filled with everything from rifles and hand grenades to medicine and bicycle tires. Some nights, the flyers also dropped Allied secret agents by parachute to assist the French partisans.

Though their story remained classified for more than fifty years, the Carpetbaggers ultimately received a Presidential Unit Citation from the US military, which declared: “it is safe to say that no group of this size has made a greater contribution to the war effort.” Along with other members of the wartime OSS, they were also awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

Based on exclusive research and interviews, the definitive story of these heroic flyers—and of the brave secret agents and resistance leaders they aided—can now be told. Written in Henderson’s “spellbinding” (USA Today) prose, Midnight Flyboys is an astonishing tale of patriotism, courage, and sacrifice."

Dirty Diggers is officially back for the season, and our first session could not have been a better kickoff. Kids gathered at the library to decorate their pots, plant seeds, enjoy snacks, and learn some brand‑new gardening skills.

One of the big lessons of the day was how to read a seed packet , like looking for key details like planting depth, spacing, and how many days to sprout. The kids caught on quickly and loved discovering what their seeds needed to grow! Once their pots were decorated and planted, many of them took their projects home to care for until our next session!

If you missed it, you can join us next time on Tuesday, May 19th at 6:30pm for Dirty Diggers: Outdoor Planting & Plant Hardiness Zones. See you there!

NMPL Announces New Reciprocal Partnership With the Huntington City-Township Public Library

The North Manchester Public Library (NMPL) is thrilled to announce a new Local Reciprocal Borrowing Covenant with the Huntington City‑Township Public Library, effective May 1st, 2026. Located in the heart of downtown Huntington, the Huntington City‑Township Public Library serves Huntington, Huntington Township, and the town of Markle with a collection of more than 160,000 books, movies, music CDs, audiobooks, video games, events, workshops, and more.

With this new partnership, NMPL cardholders - both resident, student, and non‑resident - can now sign up for a free library card at Huntington, and Huntington patrons can do the same at NMPL. This expansion joins NMPL’s existing reciprocal agreements with Roann Paw Paw Township Public Library, South Whitley Community Public Library, North Webster Community Public Library - North Webster, Indiana, and Wabash Carnegie Public Library, bringing the total to six libraries that NMPL patrons can access!

For NMPL, strengthening reciprocal partnerships is part of a long‑term effort to increase value and access for the community. Resident patrons already receive their NMPL card through the taxes they pay, but non‑resident patrons make a personal choice to purchase a card each year. The annual non‑resident fee is set by the Indiana State Library and approved by the NMPL Board, and NMPL has worked intentionally to make that investment go further. With this new covenant, non‑resident patrons now receive access to six libraries for the price of one, dramatically expanding the materials, programs, and services available to them.

Patrons interested in becoming reciprocal users simply need to bring their home library card and a valid ID or proof of address to the partner library. As with NMPL’s other reciprocal agreements, a few restrictions apply: reciprocal patrons cannot borrow Inter‑Library Loan materials or check out hotspots, but the entire rest of the library collection is available for reciprocal patrons to borrow.

Library Director Andrea Zwiebel shared her excitement about the growing network of partnerships. “Reciprocal agreements allow us to better serve our patrons while also supporting the incredible work happening in neighboring communities. When we expand access, everyone benefits - families, students, educators, and lifelong learners!”
