It was a pleasure meeting with Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez to discuss new initiatives, expanded services, and opportunities for collaboration that will better serve North Miami residents. Strong partnerships between Miami-Dade County and the City of North Miami allow us to connect our community with the resources and support they need.

October is National Crime Prevention Month, and the work of keeping North Miami safe does not belong to one department. It belongs to all of us.

Crime prevention is more than a response after something happens. It is locked doors and well-lit streets. It is neighbors who know each other. It is reporting what does not look right, watching out for seniors and young people, and refusing to look the other way when a block starts to feel unsafe. The North Miami Police Department cannot be on every corner at once. A connected community can.

This month, take one practical step. Check your home and business security. Join or start a neighborhood watch. Talk to your children about safety. If you see something, say something. And if you need help, call 911 in an emergency or the North Miami Police non-emergency line to report a concern.

A safer city is built in the everyday choices we make together.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the purple ribbon is more than a symbol. It is a reminder that silence has never protected anyone, and that help has to be louder than shame.

Domestic violence does not stay behind closed doors. It reaches neighbors, coworkers, classmates, and families across North Miami. It shows up as control, isolation, fear, and harm that too many people are taught to minimize. This month, and every month, the City of North Miami stands with survivors. You are believed. You are not alone. And you do not have to wait for a crisis to ask for support.

If you or someone you love needs help, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233, by texting START to 88788, or at thehotline.org. Local advocates are here too. Reaching out is an act of courage, not weakness.

Wear purple. Speak up. Check on the people around you. And if you are in danger, get to safety and call 911.

Today, we pause in remembrance.

October 7 is a day of reflection for our Jewish neighbors and for families who carry the memory of lives lost and lives forever changed. In North Miami, we mark this Day of Remembrance and Community Resilience with a simple promise: to honor those we remember, to stand beside one another, and to keep our city a place of dignity, safety, and peace.

May the light of this candle remind us that remembrance is an act of care, and that resilience is how a community holds together.
