During its Annual Meeting in Knoxville, Tennessee at Carson-Newman University on June 2-4, 2024, the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities (IABCU) accepted Southern Philippines Baptist Theological Seminary, Inc. (SPBTSI) as a full member. IABCU is an organization of colleges, universities, and schools that lay claim to their Baptist history, heritage, and relationships. The Association fosters intentional Christian education, while cooperating in the advancement of mutual well-being of each member.
IABCU has its origins in the Southern Association of Southern Baptist Colleges created in 1948. It replaced the Southern Baptist Education Commission dissolved by the Southern Baptist Convention in 1996, and then became the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools until 2006 when the Association adopted its current name.
Seminaries owned and operated by the Southern Baptist Convention (U.S.A.) are members of IABCU. Other notable members of the Association include Criswell College, Baptist University of Florida, Oklahoma Baptist University, William Carey University, and Campbell University. SPBTSI is the only member school located outside of North America besides being the only member school located in Asia.
Founded in the Philippines in 1955, SPBTSI (www.spbts.ph) is located in Puan, Talomo District, Davao City. The Seminary βexists to provide programs and resources for teaching Godβs Word, to equip God-called and church-affirmed men and women to become committed servant-leaders of the Body of Christ, and to develop Godly nation builders.β Its Bachelor of Arts degree programs in Theology and in Christian Education are recognized by the Philippine Governmentβs Commission on Higher Education (CHED). The Seminary also offers a K to12 Basic Education Program that has been deemed βcertifiedβ by Philippine Governmentβs Department of Education (DepEd).
SPBTSI is authorized by the State of Floridaβs Commission for Independent Education to offer academic degrees at associateβs, bachelorβs, masterβs, and doctoral levels that prepare students for religious vocations as ministers, professionals, or laypersons. Currently, the Seminary offers two advanced degrees: Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.), and Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.). In addition, the Seminaryβs extension school, PhilBEST (Philippine Baptist Extension School of Theology), which was established in 1972, offers theological education certificates and diplomas.
