To stay safe in wind chill, dress in multiple layers of loose, dry clothing, cover extremities with hats and mittens (better than gloves), protect your face/mouth with a scarf, limit time outside, and stay hydrated while avoiding alcohol/caffeine, watching for signs of frostbite (white/pale skin) or hypothermia (shivering, confusion).
Dress for the Cold
Layer Up: Wear several loose layers (inner synthetic/wool, middle fleece/wool, outer wind/waterproof) to trap air for insulation.
Stay Dry: Wet clothes lose insulating value; change out of wet items immediately.
Head & Face: Cover your head (up to 50% of heat lost there), ears, nose, and mouth with a hat, hood, and scarf/balaclava.
Hands & Feet: Mittens are warmer than gloves; wear waterproof, insulated boots and thick socks.
Limit Exposure & Plan Ahead
Minimize Time: Reduce how long you're outside during severe wind chills.
Stay Informed: Monitor weather alerts for wind chill warnings.
Travel Safely: Have a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel.
Check on Others: Especially the elderly, and bring pets indoors.
Hydration & Health
Drink Warm Fluids: Warm beverages help your core temperature.
Avoid Triggers: Stay away from alcohol, caffeine, and ni****ne, which can constrict blood vessels and reduce warmth.
Know the Signs
Frostbite: White/pale skin on fingers, toes, nose, or ears; loss of feeling.
Hypothermia: Shivering, confusion, sleepiness, slurred speech, or muscle stiffness
