Spruce Stormwater Wetland Basin Update
The Spruce Stormwater Wetland Basin is a stormwater management facility and passive park that will help reduce stormwater flooding in the Root Ditch watershed. This is a re-use of the Spruce School property at the end of Sherwood Dr. that will provide storage of stormwater during rain events, improve water quality in the Root Ditch watershed with wetland vegetation, and be a park with walking paths for residents where they can enjoy nature and observe wildlife.
The basin is 2.9 acres in size and maximum depth is 6 ft. It provides storage of 23,000 cubic feet or 4.5 million gallons of stormwater.
The basin is a dry basin that will fill during heavy rains as the level in Root Ditch rises. As the level in Root Ditch falls after the rainfall, so will the level in the basin.
The estimated peak flood reduction along the Root Ditch in this area will be around 1 ft for the 10-year storm event and 0.5 ft for the 100-year storm event.
The bottom of the basin will have a 12-foot-wide river rock channel that will simulate a natural stream, while the rest of the basin bottom will be planted with water-loving wetland vegetation. Around the basin, native wildflowers will be planted, and the entire basin will be wrapped by an 8 ft. wide asphalt path for walking, rollerblading or bicycling. There will be benches, a bicycle repair station, and educational and storybook signs along the asphalt path.
Construction vehicles will exit on Sherwood and be routed thru Windsor and MacKenzie.
Here is the plan of the basin and surrounding area. Construction will start in July and be completed by October 2026.
