2026 Annual Hydrant Testing

You may see North Plainfield firefighters out around town over the next several weeks conducting our annual fire hydrant detail.

From August 13 through October 3, our crews will be testing hydrants throughout the Borough.

What are we checking?

• Hydrants open and close properly
• Hydrants drain properly after use
• Adequate water flow
• Maintenance or repair needs
• Overall condition and readiness

Why do we do it?

Regular testing helps us identify problems before an emergency and ensures our firefighters have a reliable water supply when it matters most.

A quick note for residents:

While hydrants are being operated, you may occasionally notice temporary water discoloration as sediment in the water mains is stirred up. If this happens, running your cold water for a few minutes will typically help it clear.

So if you see our crews out testing hydrants over the next several weeks, now you know what we’re up to.

Our probationary firefighters are hard at work this week, continuing their training before being assigned to their platoons.

From reviewing the fundamentals to hands-on drills, each day is focused on building the skills, confidence, and teamwork needed on the job.

In the fire service, the training never stops. Every drill, every repetition, and every lesson helps prepare our members for the moment they’re needed most.

Please join us in welcoming our two newest members to the North Plainfield Fire Department, Firefighter Brian Marshall and Firefighter Nicholas Heuschkel.

Brian and Nicholas have officially begun their careers with the department and will soon begin the next phase of their training as they prepare to serve the residents and visitors of North Plainfield.

Congratulations to both of you on the start of this exciting journey. We wish you success and look forward to watching you grow as firefighters and members of our department.

This morning, members of A Platoon welcomed some of our retired firefighters back to the firehouse for breakfast and coffee.

It was great catching up, sharing stories, and spending time with the men who helped build the department we serve today. Thanks to everyone who stopped by—we’re already looking forward to the next one.

Last night, North Plainfield firefighters and EMTs responded to numerous storm related emergencies throughout the borough, including trees on structures, downed power lines, and structural damage caused by severe weather.
