Spring town meeting is tomorrow (Monday June 9) at 7pm in the high school gymnasium.

It's as crucial you attend this meeting to vote as you did last year. Though there is not an override on the warrant this year, there are rumors that there will be be a motion on the floor to cut additional funds from our already-anemic school budget to put more funds towards road paving. Remember: we are down 26 educator positions going into the 25-26 school year compared to the 23-24 school year. The budget has no fat to cut off for potholes.

There's also a citizens petition (articles 1-2-3) for the MBTA/3A communities act; this is a zoning law that North Reading (and all towns within certain areas near MBTA routes) must comply with by December, and this is our last opportunity to do so. Non-compliance will result in North Reading being ineligible for certain grants and programs, impacting both the school side and town side. As you all know, we don't have the budget to either lose grants or to fight the state in an expensive lawsuit should we vote against these articles and non-compliance Please vote YES for articles 1-2-3 tomorrow night.

There is no override vote at the June 9, 2025 town meeting, BUT you still need to attend! There is a growing rumor that a motion will be brought to re-allocate the town’s budget in an attempt to move even more resources away from the schools. 7 PM at the high school gym. Be there!

The school committee met last night, and outlined the proposed cuts the district is anticipating for the 25-26 school year. This is on top of the 15+ positions either cut or left unfilled for this current school year, bringing us to more than 25 lost positions in 2 years. Additional budget forums/hearings will be scheduled, but save the date for their April 28th meeting where a budget will be voted on.

Proposed budget cuts discussed at the April 7 School Committee FY26 budget hearing required to close the current budget gap.

See the below from Jeff, also running in today's Transcript. The School Committee meets on Monday 3/10 at 6:30 at the NRHS Distance Learning Lab or via Google Meet and has the FY26 preliminary budget presentation early on the agenda.

Hi All!
There is a town meeting October 7th at 7 pm at high school. Babysitting is available. Please attend (even though it is a pain) as there are several important votes. One of most important is the MBTA Communities vote. You may have seen the No signs around town on many of the lawns that had No signs for the override.

I (Sarah) am voting yes and encourage you to educate yourself on the issue. There is a summary on the town page https://www.northreadingma.gov/community-planning/pages/mbta-communities3a-compliance and there will be a presentation (hybrid) by the Select Board on Monday, September 30th.https://www.northreadingma.gov/sites/g/files/vyhlif3591/f/agendas/sb930.pdf

I encourage you to ignore the fear mongering from the No group. A No vote will reduce available funding for our town and schools. We need all the funding we can get after the failed override.

If you have a yellow yes sign, we will be picking them up by Monday if someone hasn’t grabbed yours already.

If you’d rather drop it off, you can bring it to either 13 Damon Street or 4 John Bickford Way for easy driveway drop off.

Thank you to everyone who hosted a yard sign during the election season.

We're sad to share the news that the override vote has failed, 2438 no to 1807 yes (unofficial results).

We join other communities like Hanover, Georgetown and Franklin that will see across-the-board cuts and degradation of services both in town and at the schools in the coming years.

Thank you to each and every one of you who shared a kind word, posted a graphic, waded into the discussion with your thoughts, hosted a sign, made a donation, sent a text about voting, and any number of things that helped this effort.

Though we collectively chose to allow these significant cuts to occur starting as soon as this summer, it was certainly not for lack of trying.
