At 0501 hours this morning, all Scituate stations were dispatched to George Washington Highway for a report of a house fire. Initial caller who was passing by reported that half of the house was involved.

Chief 50 arrived reporting a code red, fire showing from a single story wood frame ranch.

Tanker 61 arrived and stretched a line to the front door, making entry for extinguishment and to conduct a primary search for victims. Engine 52 and Unit 68 responded along with Ladder 22, Engine 41, Rescue 1, and Rescue 2.

While companies were responding, a second 911 call was received reporting that there may be an occupant trapped. With the reports received, a RIT team and a Tanker Task Force were requested as a precaution bringing in apparatus from Johnston, Smithfield, Foster, Glocester, Burrillville, and Coventry.

After the main body of fire was knocked down and members continued the primary search, a member of Tanker 61 fell through the first floor into the basement in the fire room. A mayday was called and the member was removed from the hole by others working in the immediate area. He was removed from the house and transported to the hospital with minor injuries. He has been released and is recovering at home.

Primary and secondary searches were completed with no victims found. The home was determined to be unoccupied.

Companies remained on scene for 3.5 hours.

We would like to thank all members of the public, neighboring departments, media, and Senator Jack Reed’s Office who reached out to check in on our injured member. Also, a special thanks as always to the Providence Canteen.

This storm has created conditions we have never experienced before. We are actively working with town officials to determine the safest and most efficient plan to resume service and get everyone back on schedule.

When service begins, please clear snow and ice from around your trash and recycling bins to ensure safe access for crews.
