Fire Captain Clay Meyer has served the citizens of Shreveport for nearly 20 years as a firefighter and paramedic. His love for service does not stop there. He also works part time as an Emergency Room Registered Nurse in various local hospitals as well as serving in the Air Force Reserves.

We thank him for his dedication to the City of Shreveport and admire his passion for helping others.

Shreveport Fire Capt. Clay Meyer, who has spent 20 years with the Shreveport Fire Department, grew up watching his father work as a firefighter. He carries on that legacy as a captain, and his resume doesnโ€™t stop there. ๐Ÿ”—tinyurl.com/4hbwmpzm

FLASH FLOOD SAFETY: TURN AROUND, DONโ€™T DROWN

Heavy rainfall can quickly turn roads into dangerous waterways. Just a small amount of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the roadway, placing lives at risk.

Remember:

โ€ข As little as 6 inches of moving water can cause a driver to lose control of a vehicle.
โ€ข Approximately 18 inches of moving water can carry away most passenger cars.
โ€ข Approximately 24 inches of moving water can sweep away SUVs, trucks, and vans.
โ€ข Never drive around barricades or road closure signs.
โ€ข Do not attempt to cross flooded roadways, even if the water appears shallow.
โ€ข Be especially cautious at night when it is difficult to judge water depth and roadway conditions.

Floodwaters can hide washed out pavement, debris, and strong currents. The safest decision is to turn around and find an alternate route.

The Shreveport Fire Department encourages all residents to stay weather aware, monitor local forecasts, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.

When you encounter a flooded roadway, remember the message that saves lives: Turn Around, Donโ€™t Drown.

๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ† Congratulations to FCOII Monica Cooper โ€“ Louisiana EMS Telecommunicator of the Year! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿš‘

The Shreveport Fire Department is proud to announce that FCOII Monica Cooper has been selected as the 2026 Louisiana EMS Telecommunicator of the Year by Louisiana EMS community partners and board members. FCOII Cooper began her career in 2001 with SFD.

This prestigious recognition will be presented during the 2026 Louisiana EMS Awards Ceremony on June 5 at the Shreveport Convention Center, held in conjunction with the Louisiana State EMS Education Conference & Expo. The ceremony honors exceptional individuals and organizations whose dedication, leadership, and service continue to advance emergency medical care throughout Louisiana.

Monicaโ€™s selection stems from her outstanding actions during a 911 medical emergency on Southern Avenue, where she successfully identified agonal respirations and provided critical assistance that exemplified the vital role emergency telecommunicators play in patient outcomes.

This award reflects the excellence Monica demonstrates every day while serving the citizens of Shreveport and the State of Louisiana. Her dedication, compassion, and expertise represent the very best of emergency communications.

Please join us in congratulating FCOII Monica Cooper on this well-deserved honor! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿš’๐Ÿš‘
