Your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are some of the most important safety devices in your home. They’re your first line of defense when seconds matter. To keep them ready when you need them most:
Check Your Batteries
• Replace batteries at least once a year
• If your alarms use long‑life batteries, still check them regularly to ensure they’re functioning properly
Test Your Alarms Monthly
• Press the test button on each alarm
• Confirm the audible alert sounds loud and clear
• Refer to your manufacturer’s instructions if you are unsure
• If an alarm doesn’t respond, replace it immediately
Working alarms increase your chances of escaping a fire or carbon monoxide emergency. A few minutes of maintenance can make all the difference.
Spring forward today!
Change your clocks forward one hour, then check your smoke and CO alarms.
If they have replaceable batteries, it may be time to add new ones. Check the manufacture date on the back to ensure the unit is not expired.
Many alarms are now sealed with a 10-year battery. It's important to test them regularly to make sure they are working properly.
