is a regional nonprofit corporation committed to improving the delivery of emergency medical services to residents of Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties in western Massachusetts. Designated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Committee coordinates communication among and enhances the efficiency of providers of EMS including ambulance services, first responders an

d hospital emergency departments. Through its work, the Committee evaluates and sets standards of quality for regional EMS, offering training, education and medical services research opportunities and developing appropriate protocols and policies for implementation. As a regional corporation, the Committee seeks regular input and broad representation on its board from the communities and constituencies it serves: consumers, municipal governments, hospitals, ambulance services and other providers of emergency medical services across the four county area. There are five regions in Massachusetts. Western Massachusetts EMS serves Region 1, which includes Berkshire County, the majority of Franklin County, Hampden County and Hampshire County.

One of the movers and shapers of our Region has passed away.
Brief history lesson: Randy took the first paramedic program here in Western MA in the late 70’s, with classmates like Linda Moriarty, Jude Moore, Steve Draghetti, Chris Bak etc. After he was certified he pulled paramedic shifts in Worcester and non-medic shifts in Western MA. He inspired many EMTs to advance their training with his gentle supportive coaching and demonstration of the ultimate medic skill, a great patient assessment. He was always an advocate for excellence in patient care.
Back in the 80’s and 90’s, Regional Councils had more authority than today. Each Region developed its own regional EMS protocols and policies in conjunction with physicians council; Regional meetings were often packed rooms with everyone wanting to give their opinions and things could get heated. When Randy spoke he would calmly summarize the views of those who had spoken before, adding in his own view, showing us that our similarities were greater than our differences. In the 90’s, state regulations required Paramedic units be staffed P-P, but Regional Councils had the power to grant waivers to agencies for P-I staffing. Again, crowded often emotional meetings in which his response was similar, reminding us of our current and future goals.
He was a great supporter of the Regional Office and would often call to check in. In the early 2000’s, the state got a grant to provide agencies with PAPPERS. This was not just “hand them out” this was a federal grant: there was tracking and paperwork and signatures to manage. Randy volunteered to use his precious free time to drive around the Region delivering the PAPPERS and handling the paper trail. Office staff nick-named him “PAPPER-Claus” and for years afterwards when he called us, we delightedly used that moniker to greet him.
Randy was a true professional who cared about the profession. We miss him dearly already. 💔

Got an extra cap for Katie?

The Portland Fire Department gave Katie an awesome cap helping to shield her so she can go enjoy being outside❤️🧢.

There are many of you who follow our page who may be connected to fire departments across the country. We would like to collect some "Caps for Katie" so she can have choices and and also give her some much-needed cheer while she is healing from her injuries from the Searsmont fire at Robbins Lumber, so we are asking for your help, with her permission ❤️.

Specifically fire department caps from across America (or beyond if we reach that far)!
