September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. 💜 🩵

At its August 26, 2026, meeting, the Northbrook Village Board issued a proclamation recognizing the month and the importance of awareness, hope, and open conversations about mental health and su***de prevention.

Throughout September, the Village and Northbrook Police Counseling Services will share information and resources to support our community.

Set a few reminders on your phone to:

🔒 Lock your vehicles and bring in keys/key fobs
👜 Remove or hide valuables
📬 Get the mail
🏠 Close the garage door
💡 Turn on outside lights
🚪 Lock doors and windows

🔒Lock It or Lose It!

You may see Northbrook Police officers in your neighborhood handing out these flyers, or you may find one on your vehicle.

Over the last few weeks, we've seen an uptick in burglarized and stolen vehicles, many involving vehicles that were left unlocked and had keys or key fobs left inside.

A few simple reminders:
🔐 Lock your vehicle every time.
🔑 Take your keys and your key fobs with you.
👛 Remove valuables or keep them out of sight.
🏠 Close your garage and lock the interior door.

If you see suspicious activity, say something and call 911.

A familiar face is taking the helm of the Northbrook Police Department! 👮‍♂️

Congratulations to Chief Marc Fainman, recently appointed Northbrook’s Chief of Police following the retirement of Chief John Ustich after 30 years of dedicated service.

A Glenbrook North graduate and 20-year veteran of the Northbrook Police Department, Chief Fainman has served in nearly every operational role within the Department — from Patrol Officer and Detective to Sergeant, Patrol Commander, and Deputy Chief.

Throughout his career, he has helped lead important initiatives including the Department’s body-worn camera program, officer training modernization, and planning for a future police facility.

Please join us in welcoming Chief Fainman to his new role and wishing him all the best! 👏

Happy National Dog Day! 🐾💙

Today gives us the perfect opportunity to open the Northbrook Police Department photo album and share a piece of our history we're especially proud of: more than half a century of K9 teams serving our community.

Since our canine program began in 1970, generations of dogs and their handlers have been part of the NPD family. The uniforms have changed. The squad cars have definitely changed. The photographs have gone from black and white to the incredible images we can capture today.

But look through these photos and you'll see something that hasn't changed much at all.

The partnership. The trust. And the unmistakable pride of a handler standing beside their dog.

Today, we celebrated Dispatcher Brian Riley and an incredible 40 years of service with the Northbrook Police Department.

For four decades, Brian has been a trusted voice behind the radio and phone, serving our officers and community with dedication, experience and professionalism.

💙Feel Good Friday! 💙

Today's feel-good moment is also the start of an exciting new chapter for one of our own!

For the past two years, Kevin Mendoza has served our Northbrook community as a Community Service Officer. This morning, we were proud to watch him take the next step in his law enforcement career as he was officially sworn in as Northbrook Police Department's newest officer!

Soon, Kevin will head to the police academy to begin his training. We're excited to see what's ahead of him, although we're guessing there may be a few push-ups in his immediate future. 😄

Please help us Congratulate Kevin and wish him luck at the academy! 🚓💙👏

📚🐾 Happy Back to School!

The backpacks are packed, the pencils are sharpened, and Chloe is apparently headed to 4th grade. (She’s a little behind in math, but excels at lunch.)

First-day-of-school photos are a fun tradition, but before you post, take a quick look at what else you might be sharing. School names, teachers, ages, grade levels and locations can reveal more than you intended.

We had a great time hanging out with everyone who joined us today for Cone with a Cop!

There were plenty of smiles, lots of ice cream, a few tours of our UTV…and one particularly suspicious character who attempted to make off with both a burger and the cones. 🍔🍦

Fortunately, the Hamburglar’s crime spree was short-lived. Chief Fainman was on the case, and the suspect was quickly apprehended. No burgers were harmed. The status of the ice cream remains under investigation. 😂

A huge thank you to our Northbrook McDonald's and their wonderful team for hosting us! And thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, met our officers, visited with Therapy K9 Chloe, and spent part of the day with us. We always enjoy getting the chance to connect with our community... especially when ice cream is involved.
