NCJW - National Council of Jewish Women Chicago North Shore Section NCJW is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action

The National Council of Jewish Women is a volunteer organization that has been at the forefront of social change for over a century. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW courageously takes a progressive stance on issues such as child welfare, women’s rights and reproductive freedom. Founded in Chicago in 1893, National Council of Jewish Women is the oldest Jewish women’s volunteer organization in the U

nited States, numbering over 90,000 nationally. The Chicago North Shore Section, with over 1,000 members, makes an impact through an integrated program of education, community service and social action. We offer our members personal growth, volunteer opportunities, education, recreation and special events.

This morning, NCJW deeply mourns the loss of Gloria Steinem, a trailblazing feminist, journalist, and activist whose work transformed the fight for gender equality in America and around the world.

Gloria was arguably the most iconic Jewish feminist of all time. For more than half a century, Gloria helped move feminism into the mainstream and build a movement for women to have power over our bodies, our lives, and our futures. Her leadership tore down barriers, opened doors, and inspired generations to keep pushing forward.

Gloria’s connection to NCJW was deeply personal. Her grandmother, Pauline Perlmutter Steinem — a suffragist and pioneering Jewish communal leader — served as president of NCJW’s Toledo Section. Decades later, Gloria carried that legacy forward, championing issues NCJW cares deeply about, including reproductive freedom and women’s equality.

Gloria Steinem’s legacy cannot be undersold, even as we recognize that the movement she helped build was imperfect and too often failed to fully include all women. She carried on her shoulders a movement that generations since have challenged, expanded, and strengthened. This is the movement we are proud to continue building today.

May her memory be for a blessing, and a revolution.

61 years ago, Medicare and Medicaid were signed into law, a landmark promise that every American deserves access to care. Today, that promise is under attack. On July 30th, Chicagoans are joining a statewide day of action to defend what we've won and demand more. Join patients, community members, and elected champions as we rally together for the real reform Illinois families deserve.

This summer, we are raising funds through NCJW Gives Back to purchase new backpacks for child survivors of domestic abuse. These backpacks are an integral part of our Luggage for Freedom program. As their families start over, we want to provide children in shelters with this essential item. Each donation of $36 will purchase and fill a backpack for a child in need. Please click here: https://ncjwcns.org/donate/ and select “NCJW Gives Back” in the drop-down menu. Your donation will go directly to purchasing the backpacks and other items for Luggage for Freedom’s packing day this fall.
