On Thursday, May 14th, several students attended Senator for a Day at Saint Francis, an event sponsored by Senator Wayne Langerholc. Students got the opportunity to act as senators and collaborate on proposed legislation in their committees, then come together as a whole committee and work to either have the bill pass or fail. Two of our students got to act as the committee spokesperson and present their bills to the full committee.
Students that attended were: Maycee Weakland, Avery Shutty, Ciara McCracken, Alyssa Yahner, Julia Mitory, Braden Bougher, Matt Allen, Tyler McCreery, Zach Cavallo, and Tyler Friedman

On Wednesday, the elementary celebrated our April, May, June and July birthdays with cupcakes and pencils. Happy birthday to all! 🎉🎂🎈

On Tuesday our students competed in the SeAL (Sea, Air, and Land) Challenge at Penn State Altoona with 3 Land teams and 1 Air team participating.

Congratulations to Keita DeRosa and Lillian Statler for winning the Land Challenge. This is especially impressive for Keita, who was also part of the championship team two years ago after finishing 2nd last year.

In the Land Challenge, students used a robot equipped with a claw and GoPro camera to identify “radioactive” cans and move them into the correct sorting containers. Our Air team competed using a drone to scan QR codes and identify radioactive bins from the air.

All of the students did an outstanding job representing our school through teamwork, engineering, problem solving, and innovation. Great job to everyone who competed.

On Friday, May 8, four of our 5th grade students (Raine Kirsch, Peyton Kuzio, Avalyn Radcliffe, and Luigi Turano) traveled to Spring Cove Middle School to represent NC at PMEA’s District 6 Songfest. This one-day music festival had the students prepare five songs ahead of time, and practice all day with 130 other 5th grade students from schools across Cambria, Blair, Bedford, and Somerset counties. The students had a great time and put on a great concert that evening. Way to go, musicians!
