This September 11th marks 19-years since the terrorist attack that changed our world, how we live our lives, and how we served.

Everyone has their story about how they received the news. I heard
when assigned as the Support Platoon Leader with 1-172nd Armor in St. Albans. Once the reality and scope of what had happened set in, we all knew everything had changed, casting our role as a National Guard in a different light. Global terrorism had come to America. 2,977 people died in the attacks of 9/11, with more than 6000 injured - people of every gender, race, creed, ethnicity and religious background.

Please take a moment today and reflect. Reflect and remember the heroes who served on that day in New York City. The First Responders who looked at a chaotic situation and without hesitation, rushed into the fray and performed what would be their final act of selfless service.

These actions show their character and what heroes do. They selflessly run towards danger for the safety and protection of others. They held the values and personal fortitude that everyone should aspire to.

Since that day, the Vermont National Guard has repeatedly been asked to go above and beyond expectations. Time and again, we have done that. We will continue to do so, without hesitation. It is our solemn duty.

The Vermont National Guard has also had our share of hardship and loss. Every day I walk past the names of our fallen, lost in the War on Terror. I remember them. Their sacrifice is felt and honored, and every day we think of them. They were our comrades-in-arms who decided that in a time of war, they would selflessly serve their country.

I know lot is asked of the Vermont National Guard, but today I am not asking. I implore you to keep not only our fallen in your thoughts, but also our Gold Star families. Think of them and the hard sacrifice they continue to live with every day. Reach out to our Gold Star families, check on our combat Veterans who served with those we lost, and honor their memories together. We may not be able to easily remember together in person, but for me, a phone call, text, or email from someone I haven’t heard from in a while, can mean the world.

Going into this weekend, take a moment to reflect, to honor, and to remember all that we have gone through together. I know I will.

Getting some good training in! The Army has a saying, "we own the night". For those who haven't trained with night vision equipment, the lasers are not visible without the goggles, they are infrared light.

If you see this going around, rest assured that it is FALSE. There is NO national quarantine and that is NOT the purpose of the Stafford Act.

January Drill 2020 was packed with a lot of stuff!

First, Cadet Andrew Connolly was awarded an Army Achievement Medal, which his sister was able to pin on in front of friends and family.

Next, RSP conducted Call For Fire training on the Virtual Battle Simulator, learning how to drop warheads on foreheads.

RSP also received Counter - IED training, with some exercises and loads of material training aids of real life examples.

Lastly, we took some of the more complex parts of the ACFT to train on, as RSP prepares for Basic Combat Training with the Army this summer! @ Norwich University

Please welcome the newest members of the VTARNG! Connor Losen, Anthony Tedeschi, and Nicholas Berns enlisted as Combat Engineers and will attend Basic Combat Training this summer!

Why do Norwich Cadets enlist into the Guard if they plan to commission after school? Because we offer the best training the Army can offer over the summer, as well as amazing benefits and money for school! And we release Guard members upon acceptance of a scholarship or contract!

Congratulate Carson Heskett on his contracting! Heskett accepted a GFRD scholarship the VTARNG offered him, and will go on to do great things in the Guard.

Heskett not only made the commitment to be a better Officer, Soldier, and Leader by enlisting with us and attending Basic Combat Training last summer, he did exceedingly well, achieving Honor Graduate of infantry school at Fort Beginning, GA.

Heskett has made our office his home away from home, it will be a very sad day when he leaves! Until that time you can almost bet that if our doors are open, he's in there, encouraging other Cadets to do the right thing and enlist with us. Or just hanging out. Congrats buddy! @ Norwich University

Great job, Cadets! You made it past Rook Week!

The culminating event after an intense week of training, Rook Week (Rook Orientation), the new Corps of Cadets recruits take a one-mile trip down the Dog River, which flows through campus.

Commandant Staff, Corps of Cadets leaders, faculty and University President Schneider join rooks in this exercise each year.

Cold, wet and tired, rooks begin to understand the pride that binds cadets, past and present.

... because would it be a good Monday without it?

Today we have 2LT Sulufaigaosoara Shalhout who is currently in the with the Medical Detachment!

2LT Shalhout is from the Samoan culture, and fun fact, although she was raised on a tropical island she actually loves winter!

We all know food is a priority, so, some Samoan dishes she loves are palusami and breadfruit. Something else Shalhout loves is the quote "Samoa Muamua le Atua" which translates to "Samoa, let God be first.”

In the second photo you will find Shalhout's boyfriend, 2LT Sinjin Ala. The couple met their sophomore year in high school and decided to attend Georgia Military College so they could commission as Army Officers together.

Stay tuned for next weeks so you can learn more about 2LT Ala and where they are today!

Hello, I am reaching out as a volunteer in the search for Austin Colson, a 19 year old missing young man from Sharon, VT. He has been missing since Jan. 11th. The family, friends and volunteers typically meet Saturday mornings between 9:30-10am at the Sharon Trading Post and search for several hours. There is a specific region we focus on within the Sharon area. Dateline featured Austin's case, but getting help searching has been challenging. This is heartbreaking for the family. Foul play IS suspected, but the sole suspect is under supervision. If anyone would consider helping we would forever be grateful! Thank You! Feel free to share this message!
