Today, our Northfield Police Department family joins our law enforcement community in mourning the loss of Minnesota State Patrol Lieutenant Tyler Uthe.

Before coming to Northfield, I spent many years with the Minnesota State Patrol and had the privilege of supervising Tyler. He was an outstanding Lieutenant and Trooper, dedicated to public service, and someone who genuinely cared about the people he served and the people he worked alongside.

His death is a heartbreaking reminder that behind every badge is a human being. Officers are exposed to trauma, tragedy, stress, and pain that most people never see. While we train to be strong for others, the experiences we carry can have lasting effects.

As law enforcement across the state reflects on this loss, I ask that you keep not only Tyler’s family, friends, and fellow Troopers in your thoughts, but also remember that the officers serving Northfield face many of the same challenges. They respond to tragic crashes, deaths, violence, abuse, and people experiencing some of the worst moments of their lives. They carry those experiences home with them long after a call has ended.

I also ask for understanding. Police officers are human too. We have families, struggles, worries, and difficult days just like everyone else. While we strive to provide the highest level of service to our community every day, there are times when we may be carrying burdens that others cannot see. A little patience, kindness, and grace can go a long way.

Your support matters more than you may realize. A simple thank you, a positive interaction, or taking a moment to recognize the human being behind the badge can make a difference.

Today, we honor Tyler’s service and sacrifice. We also recommit ourselves to supporting the well-being of those who continue to serve our communities every day.

Rest easy, Tyler. We have the watch from here.

With the nicer weather finally here, we’re also seeing speeds start to creep up around town. The sun comes out, the windows go down, and suddenly everyone’s car “just naturally runs faster than normal.”

You may have noticed our speed trailer out on Highway 3. It’s one of the tools we use to give quiet reminders about speed and help drivers stay aware of how fast they’re actually going. If you pay attention to the quiet trailer, you’ll usually avoid any further conversation. If not, you may end up having a friendly chat with one of our officers—who might also provide a paper reminder to take home.

If there are areas you’re noticing concerns with speeding, let us know. Community input helps us decide where traffic issues are happening and to focus more attention to. We do need enough space for the trailer to be placed safely, without creating a traffic or visibility hazard (so unfortunately, no “creative landscaping placements” or front yards).

And a quick clarification on requests:
No, we can’t hide the trailer.
Yes, officers can hide.
No, it can’t sit in your driveway “just for a little bit.”
And yes… it’s still watching your speed even if you pretend it’s not there.

Slow down, stay alert, and help keep Northfield’s roads safe this summer.

Today, on Peace Officers Memorial Day, we pause to remember the law enforcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. Their sacrifice, courage, and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten.

We also recognize the families, friends, and fellow officers who continue to carry that loss each day.

This profession asks a lot of those who wear the badge, and today serves as a reminder of the responsibility, risk, and service that comes with it.

We are also grateful for the officers currently serving our communities each day — answering calls, helping others, making difficult decisions, and continuing to show up regardless of the challenges that come with the job.

Please join us in honoring the fallen and supporting those who continue to serve.

National Police Week

This week recognizes the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across the country and honors those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

We also want to recognize the dedication and professionalism of the officers serving our community every day. Policing is strongest when it is supported by a connected and engaged community, and we are grateful for the continued support, partnerships, and trust we receive from so many throughout our city.

Thank you to those who continue to answer the call to serve, protect, and help others.

Please take a moment this week to remember the fallen and recognize those who continue to serve.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms in our department and throughout our community.

Today we also want to recognize the moms at home who keep everything running while their spouses work long hours, nights, weekends, and holidays. Your support behind the scenes makes this job possible more than most people realize.

To all moms — thank you for everything you do, both seen and unseen. We hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Community Alert: Increase in Vehicle Thefts

Over the past week, our officers have responded to a noticeable increase in vehicle thefts in the area. We are actively investigating these cases and increasing patrol efforts.

We also want to share a few simple reminders that can help reduce the risk of becoming a target:

-Avoid leaving keys or key fobs inside your vehicle
-Lock your doors, even when parked at home
-Keep valuables out of sight or take them with you

We know these incidents are frustrating, and no one deserves to have their property taken. Taking a few extra precautions can help make your vehicle a less attractive target while we continue our enforcement efforts.

If you see suspicious activity, please report it right away.

We appreciate the community’s partnership in keeping our neighborhoods safe.
