Israel Cancer Research Fund - Chicago Chapter

Israel Cancer Research Fund - Chicago Chapter ICRF provides pivotal grants to outstanding Israeli scientists to support groundbreaking cancer research across Israel.

Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) is a nationwide charitable organization that receives its total income from private donations. ICRF was founded in 1975 by a group of American and Canadian researchers, oncologists, and lay people determined to harness Israel's educational and scientific resources in the fight against cancer. Its initial purpose was to stem the "brain drain" of Israeli researcher

s by providing funds for postdoctoral fellowships for young Ph.D.'s. ICRF is the only U.S.-based charity solely devoted to supporting cancer research in Israel. Since its inception, ICRF has provided more than $72 million in funding to support innovative studies by Israeli scientists. Our awardees are selected through a rigorous peer-review process that is conducted by a world-class scientific panel. We support individuals at all of the major research institutions in Israel. ICRF-funded researchers have been making significant progress and have been able to develop improved chemotherapies, advanced techniques in bone marrow transplantation, and an enhanced understanding of tumor suppressor genes. By continuing to support cancer research in Israel for the benefit of all mankind, the ICRF:

makes it possible for scientists to utilize Israel's unique population of diverse ethnic groups which afford unequalled opportunities to study genetic and environmental data that contribute to cancer;

places a strong emphasis on young scientists pioneering in new directions with fresh approaches to areas of research that have challenged the experts;

respects and draws upon Israel's unparalleled convergence of some of the finest scientists and physicians in the free world - a resource that must not be lured to conduct research outside Israel.

With warmer months bringing more time outdoors, awareness of skin cancer and melanoma becomes especially important.

1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70, making it the most common cancer in the United States.

May is Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month, and ICRF is proud to support research related to these cancers that deepens understanding of disease development, improves early detection, and advances more effective treatment options.

Did you know that bladder cancer has one of the highest recurrence rates of any cancer? Nearly 70% of cases return after treatment, which underscores the critical need for better therapies. Research also shows that while smoking is widely linked to lung cancer, it is the single largest risk factor for bladder cancer as well.

This May, Bladder Cancer Awareness Month, we are proud to highlight an immunotherapy research advancement for bladder cancer by Professors Gilad Bachrach and Ofer Mandelboim at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Funded in part by ICRF and recently published in the journal Cells, the study shows that an inactivated strain of E. coli bacteria triggered a strong immune response against bladder tumors with lower toxicity than standard treatment. By pioneering safer, more effective solutions, this innovative research offers new hope for bladder cancer patients worldwide.

This May, Brain Cancer Awareness Month, we recognize the urgent need for more research into this disease, and ICRF-funded scientists are leading the way toward discoveries that bring hope to patients and families worldwide.

Brain tumors account for about 1% of all new cancer cases in the U.S. each year, yet they remain among the most difficult cancers to treat. For glioblastoma, the most common and most severe form, the five-year survival rate is approximately 7%.

ICRF grantee Prof. Tali Ilovitsh at Tel Aviv University is developing a noninvasive method to better detect and understand glioblastoma, with the goal of reducing the need for risky procedures and opening the door to more targeted, effective treatments.

Happy Mother’s Day!

We honor and remember the women who mean the world to us, both those who are here with us and those we carry in our hearts forever.

They inspire us to continue pressing forward in the fight against cancer, enabling Israel’s leading scientists to advance cancer research and bring hope to families everywhere.

On World Ovarian Cancer Day, we’re proud to highlight a newly published study in the journal Molecular Oncology from the lab of ICRF-funded researcher Dr. Ruth Perets at Rambam Health Care Campus - Hospital. The team has identified key genes involved in the spread of high-grade serous ovarian cancer, the most common and aggressive form of the disease.

This discovery deepens scientific understanding of ovarian cancer biology and could help pave the way for new targeted therapies. It also reflects ICRF’s leadership in driving Israel’s innovative cancer research to improve outcomes and bring hope to patients worldwide.

This research was funded in part by the ICRF Beverley Librach Abshez Initiative for Ovarian and Female Reproductive System Cancers Grant and the ICRF Len and Susan Mark Phase II initiative for Ovarian and Uterine/MMMT Grant.

In recognition of National Cancer Research Month this May, our Executive Director Alan Herman reflects on the power of partnership, progress, and paying it forward.

We were proud to see our International Chair, Dr. Arnie Baskies, honored at the American Cancer Society’s Night of Hope. His lifelong dedication to advancing cancer research, mentoring others, and supporting patients continues to inspire our mission.

We are also encouraged by the global impact of ICRF-funded research. From Israel to the world stage, including the recent American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) meeting in San Diego, our scientists are driving meaningful progress.

This work is only possible because of our community. Thank you to our Chicago supporters, especially the young professionals and mentors who made the Visions Revolving Tables event such a success, and to all who continue to stand with us in the fight against cancer.
