September is National Preparedness Month, and emergency plans aren't one-size-fits-all, especially for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 🧡

Here's something worth remembering: your disability rights don't get suspended during an emergency. You have the right to accessible shelters, effective communication, your service animal by your side, and reasonable accommodations.

Want to build a plan that actually works for you or someone you support? Center for People With Disabilities and Xcel Energy are hosting free workshops in Boulder (Sept 12) and Broomfield (Oct 17). You'll walk away with a go-bag, a plan, and a shot at winning a backup generator.

In 1978, a group of disabled activists known as the Gang of 19 blocked city buses at Colfax and Broadway. They refused to move until RTD agreed to make its buses accessible. That's not far from where The Arc of Adams County does its work today.

The fight continues. And as we have been for the last 64 years - we're in your corner.

Take 20 minutes out of your day to listen to this great story from NPR:

Thirty-six years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, guaranteeing civil rights for millions of Americans. But the movement that made that day possible began years earlier. One pivotal victory was won by a small, often-forgotten group of activists in Denver known as the "Gan...

July 26 marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Easy to think it came from Washington, but part of its roots trace right back to Denver.

In 1978, nineteen disability activists blocked two RTD buses at Colfax and Broadway. They wanted something simple: buses they could actually ride. That protest became known as the Gang of 19, and it's considered one of the founding moments of the disability rights movement.

The fight didn't stop with buses. It grew into ADAPT, a national organization that spent over a decade pushing for accessibility, and helped lay the groundwork for the ADA in 1990.
So when we talk about disability pride this month, we're not just celebrating a law. We're celebrating the people who fought for it. Some of them right here in Colorado.

Thirty-six years later, the work isn't finished. But it started with people who refused to
accept ""no.""

🚨ACTION ALERT: A new federal rule could put Medicaid coverage at risk for people with disabilities. Not because they're ineligible. Because of paperwork.

The rule requires many adults on Medicaid to prove 80+ hours a month of work, school, or volunteering to keep their coverage. People with disabilities are supposed to be exempt. But the new rule makes that exemption harder to prove, and it also narrows the definition of "medically frail."

The public comment period closes July 31. Every comment becomes part of the official record. You don't have to start from scratch. The Arc has a sample letter you can edit - find it here: https://act.thearc.org/campaign/164015/
