On September 11, 2001, two thousand nine hundred seventy seven people woke up and started their day. They groomed themselves, had their morning coffee, and started their commute. They entered their workplace; boarded a plane; they did what they did never expecting the horror that was about to unfold before them. We honor them today with memorials, the ringing of bells, and the pronouncement of their names lest anyone forget.

On the 25th anniversary of a day that changed the world forever for those who witnessed it, we also honor the 50,000 first responders, workers, and lower Manhattan residents who have been diagnosed with 9/11 related cancers. We remember the 3400 first responders and 4000+ workers and residents who lost their battles to cancer and other respiratory illnesses. We saw one of the worst tragedies unfold before us and we saw the very best in humanity when we saw the brave men and women run toward a horror when most of us were trying to run away from it. But we must also recognize that it didn’t end in the weeks and months after September 11, 2001 and for so many in our community and neighboring communities the effects of 9/11 are with us everyday 25 years later. We honor them today in our neighborhoods in addition to the memorials at ground zero, The Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The picture is shared by the Sillery Family and shows a toddler aged David in 1976 on the observation deck of the South Tower looking back at his family with the North Tower in the distance. Never forget.

Never forget.
