We spent yesterday morning with Northwood-Kensett 3rd Grade. Students were tasked with creating their own balloons for the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. We saw lots of creative balloons, including frogs, cows, turkeys, and watermelons, as well as Hello Kitty, K-Pop Demon Hunters, Snoopy, self-portraits, and more!

We were very excited to join Central Springs 2nd Grade on their field trip to Lime Creek last Friday! We discussed how different species of wildlife respond to the changing of seasons. Students got to practice their best squirrel interpretations, hiding nuts and searching for them later in the day. We also took some time to play a very popular prairie game called camouflage.

Today was another great day full of programs! We were lucky enough to have Scott and Kurt from the Iowa DNR’s Clear Lake Fisheries Management Office join us at Worth County Lake and demonstrate the process of electrofishing to Central Spring’s ecology class!
Additionally, we were able to join Central Spring’s kindergarten at the Kinne acreage for a fun day of fall activities! Big thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Kinne for inviting us out and hosting such a fun event!

We were very excited to facilitate two environmental education programs yesterday!
We began our day in Decorah with Northwood-Kensett’s Ecology class in the Driftless Area. This region is unique to certain parts of the Midwest due to the lack of glacial drift, leaving breathtaking features behind like steep hills, valleys, caves, cold water streams, and more. The class explored some of these cold water streams (known for supporting trout species and exhibiting exceptional water quality) and visited the Decorah Fish Hatchery.
Additionally, we were with Northwood-Kensett 5th Graders discussing the art of Flint knapping. Flint knapping is a technique used by Native Americans for thousands of years to craft tools such as arrowheads, spearheads, knives, and more. Flint knapping is a significant aspect of Native American culture and is still practiced by hobbyists worldwide! In this program, the 5th graders got to put their flint knapping skills to the test!

Limnology is the study of the biological, chemical, and physical properties of inland waters (streams, rivers, wetlands, lakes, ponds). The class practiced their skills with dip and seine nets in the Shell Rock River at Swensrud Park!
