Hi All! I wanted to drop a quick line and thank everyone for their support. Things didn't work out the way we hoped, and that's unfortunate for all of Norton.

Please mark your calendars for the May 8th Town Meeting - 1pm on the football field at NHS. We will be voting on the passage of the Debt Exclusion for the Athletic Complex, Sr. and Community Support Center and Town Hall. Due to state law on borrowing, it will need a 2/3 majority to pass. Please follow the Norton4Everyone FB page for further updates!

It's election day, Norton!! Come on down to Norton Middle from 8-5 and let your voice be heard! Vote YES on 1!

04/09/2021

Happy Friday Evening, Norton! We wanted to take a moment on this election eve to say Thank You! Thanks to the 9 members of the Charter Commission for the work they have done the last 2 years. To all the volunteers that collected signatures, and stood in the cold, went door to door - just so we had the right to vote in the Charter Commission. To people who signed, who followed this crazy journey as it progressed, and are ready for change - THANK YOU.

This has been a 3+ year process that all culminates in YOUR vote tomorrow. So, to everyone that asked questions, came to meetings to discuss how our government could be better, and spent time engaged in the process - THANK YOU.

Now, please show up and vote YES tomorrow 8-5 at Norton Middle School so I can send another sappy thank you message again tomorrow night!! See you at the polls!

We've been wrestling with whether to share this information or not, but feel like it's time. Norton, do you know that there are 3 separate registered 'vote no' political groups for Question 1? We estimate that together they've spent about $10K on mailings, websites, etc. These three groups can't work with each other, so they have all been doing their own thing. The NC3 team raised about $1,400, and used it to mail a postcard to the 3000 households in town most likely to vote. All of this info is public record.

We aren't sharing this looking for sympathy, we're sharing it because we want you to understand that people are willing to spend a LOT of their own money to keep town meeting and the voter disenfranchisement that comes with it. Have to work? Have child or elder care issues? These people do not care about your issues or your vote. They want to keep the current system, because they've figured out that if they bring 50 or 75 of their neighbors they can influence the zoning for what can be built in their back yard - even if it's better for the town as a whole that it happen.

We want equal representation. People we can elect to be informed and vote for what's best for the town as a whole... not who vote with whomever yells loudest at a town meeting we all can't wait to leave. We want efficient government, not telling a neighborhood with safety concerns that we can't lower the speed limit until after the Town Meeting 6 months from now.

Most of all, we want those of you who feel the same, who feel that your voice isn't equal in a town meeting format, and are tired of the inefficient processes we deal with because of it, to come out and VOTE tomorrow (4/10)! Those that are clinging to a 300 year old form of government certainly will be there, and we can't win without YOU!

We want you to VOTE YES on Question 1! Saturday 4/10, Norton Middle School 8am-5pm.

14-0.

Here's something worth noting in this Charter change (Question 1) debate…

In 2004 a five-member appointed Town Government Study committee reviewed Norton's form of government and recommended moving to a Town Council form of government.

In 2021 a 9-member ELECTED Charter Commission has reviewed Norton's form of government and recommended moving to a Town Council form of government.

14-0. Unanimous. Your neighbors, from all different backgrounds, of different ages, of different political persuasions, “townies”, “newbies” …all agreed. 14-0!

Think about trying to get 14 people to agree on ANYTHING!

It's time. Vote “YES” on Question 1 on April 10th at the Middle School between 8am and 5pm. Tell your friends and neighbors to come out and vote “YES” too!

Norton Citizens for a Charter Commission

Norton Citizens for a Charter Commission is a community group that supports the efforts of the Charter Commission elected on 4/23/19. We will be sharing their events, and information to help inform the community. Any inquiries, suggestions or concerns should be directed to them at [email protected]. You can also get additional information about their progress online at https://www.nortonma.org/charter-commission.

The Town Charter is the Governing Document for our Town, it lays out all the different departments, committees, etc. whether they are elected or appointed and how they are to function. A Charter Commission is an independently elected body that examines the town’s charter and proposes changes big and small that are then sent to another ballot vote to be approved. It’s a long process, and you can learn more about it by checking out the FAQ document attached to our FB Page.
