Norton Middle Schoolers were treated to bit of living history May 19, when Holocaust survivor Janet Applefield presented her program, Combatting Hate and Prejudice.

A “hidden child” survivor of the N**i genocide campaign, Janet told the story of how one small act of kindness changed the course of history for her and future generations.

She related her personal story to the rise of hate crimes today. Her message to students and teachers at the school: Recognize your own prejudices and the impact intolerance can have on
yourself and those around you.

In a typical year, Janet presents her program to 4,000 children in middle and high schools. The program was made possible in part by a grant from the Norton Cultural Council.

Here comes our next grant cycle! Get ready to apply!

The Norton Cultural Council (NCC) supports the arts and sciences in our community in part by funding grants to individuals and organizations. Grant amounts typically range from $250 to
$1,000. The application period begins September 2 and ends October 16. We’ll announce our funding decisions in January, 2026.

This year we’ve helped make a wide range of enchanting, enlightening programs possible – everything from live theater, chamber music and crafts programs, to fossil discoveries, puppet
shows and hip hop and line dancing for seniors.

He’s on the road again. 🎵🎶
Matt York, that is, singing the songs of – and telling stories about – music legend Willie Nelson. York will appear Tuesday, August 19, 7-8:15pm, at the Norton Public Library, 68 E. Main St. in Norton, MA.

The award-winning musician and author will perform in the library park, so bring a blanket or chairs. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the concert will move inside the library.

The event is sponsored by a grant from the Norton Cultural Council.
