Most people rarely think about Public Works, and honestly, that’s usually a sign they’re doing their job well.
Every single day in Norton, families wake up and begin their routines without a second thought. The lights turn on. Water flows from the faucet. Roads are open and passable. Storm drains carry away heavy rain. Traffic signals work. Parks and facilities are maintained. Sidewalks, signs, snowplows, catch basins, trucks, pumps, pipes, equipment, and infrastructure quietly do what they are supposed to do.
It all feels normal because so much work happens behind the scenes to make it feel that way.
But imagine a day without Public Works.
Imagine heavy rain with nowhere to drain. Roads deteriorating without repair. No reliable water service. No sewer system. Unsafe intersections. Parks and public spaces falling into disrepair. Basic daily routines that we all take for granted suddenly becoming difficult or impossible.
Public Works is not just about roads and equipment. At its core, it is about people.
It is about making sure families have clean drinking water.
It is about helping children get to school safely.
It is about protecting public health.
It is about maintaining the quality of life that makes a community feel cared for and connected.
And behind all of that are dedicated professionals who show up early, stay late, answer emergency calls in storms and snow, and work incredibly hard, often without much recognition, simply because they care deeply about serving their community.
To our Norton DPW team and all of the employees who help keep this town running every day: thank you.
Your work may not always be visible, but its impact is felt by every resident, every single day.
Public Works is not just infrastructure.
It is part of the foundation of a strong community.
