Congratulations, Ms. Walker, Ms. Paris, Ms. Signore, and Ms. Luciana — Jefferson is so proud of you!
We are incredibly proud of four of our own — Diana Walker, Maria Paris, Julie Signore, and Amy Luciana — who have been selected as Fund for Teachers grant recipients, made possible through the generous support of the Dalio Foundation.

On March 31, Jefferson, we gathered for a special surprise announcement. Principal Cesar Nina and Superintendent Dr. Alexandra Estrella, joined by representatives from the Dalio Foundation, revealed the exciting news!

This summer, these dedicated Jefferson educators will travel to California for a hands-on marine ecology experience, visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Santa Cruz Island, Catalina Island, Año Nuevo State Park, and Big Sur. They'll study coastal ecosystems, observe elephant seals, and snorkel through kelp forests alongside real marine scientists. But this journey is truly about our students. Every discovery made, every skill learned, and every experience shared will come back to Jefferson's classrooms — enriching science, literacy, STEAM, and environmental education for all 460 of our students. From kindergarten through 5th grade, our kids will feel the impact of what these four incredible educators bring home.

At Jefferson, we believe our students deserve teachers who are as curious and passionate about learning as they are. Principal Nina and the entire Jefferson family couldn't be more proud of these four outstanding educators for earning this well-deserved recognition.

🌊 Dive into learning at Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School!
Whether under the sea or along the coast, Jefferson students are immersed in exploring marine life and ecosystems, discovering how they can make a difference in their own backyard. 🐠🦀🌎
In addition to a rich and engaging curriculum that builds a strong foundation for future success, students at Jefferson dive deep into one of our community’s most valuable resources — the Long Island Sound. From hands-on field trips, boating adventures, and shoreline exploration at Calf Pasture Beach, students experience marine science firsthand thanks to a special partnership with The Maritime Aquarium. 🚤🪸

📚✨ Ms. Gonzalez hosted a warm, hands-on, and student-led workshop to help our dual language families support their children with upcoming tests. Parents and students practiced simple strategies families can use in any language to build confidence and problem-solving skills at home. 💬🧠

Highlights:
🗣️ Bilingual support: tips and examples available in English and Spanish
⏱️ Test-ready routines: quick daily practice (10 minutes) that makes a difference
🧩 Problem-solving talk: how to “think aloud” with your child without giving answers
📦 Resources to take home: A Padlet with games, question stems, and practice ideas

👏 Thank you, Ms. Gonzalez, and thank you to all the families and staff who came to teach and learn together.

Thank you to The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk for hosting an incredible Humpback Whale Program for our 2nd–5th graders last week!

Students had the amazing opportunity to step inside a 40-foot inflatable humpback whale to explore its size and learn about its lungs, stomach, heart, and more! Through hands-on activities, they discovered how whales eat, stay warm, and communicate in the ocean.

This experience is part of our Marine Science Pathway, which aligns with the NGSS Norwalk Science Curriculum and Ocean Literacy Principles. Thanks to our partnership with The Maritime Aquarium, our students get to dive deep into real-world learning that makes science come alive!

As we approach the start of a new year, we at Jefferson and NECC wanted to spend some time building connections, collaborating, communicating, and, in the spirit of the major focus of work this year as we develop our Portrait of a Graduate, critical thinking.

Last week on the first day back for teachers, we gave them one package of balloons (not inflated), one roll of masking tape, and 20 minutes to build the tallest tower they could. Team members had to strategize a plan, communicate effectively and work together to win.

Congratulations to our yellow team, who built the tallest, free-standing structure that stayed up!

A volunteer committee of NPS school counselors were hard at work this June, helping to write the district’s Developmental Guidance Curriculum in Workforce Development for Grade 2.

This work will be implemented through monthly classroom lessons co-taught by our school counselors and the classroom teachers in Grades K-2 across the district and focus on the following state standard for Workforce Development: Identifying personal values, personality, abilities and work interests in relation to career options and the world of work.

Scholars will explore and identify their likes and dislikes, their hobbies and favorite leisure activities. They will learn the reasons that people choose a particular job or career, and they will define personality and how it influences a person’s career choices.

Thank you to our Workforce Development School Counselor June 2024 Committee Members:

Ayesha McFadden-Harris from Fox Run Elementary School
Fabiola Estevez-Artiles from the Kendall College and Career Academy
Grace D’Onofrio from Future Ready Programs
Lilliana Murillo from the Center for Global Studies
Poliana Coelho from PTECH-Norwalk
