Congratulations to Sergeant Major Aidan Kang of Southeast Academy on being sworn in as the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Student Board Member for the 2026-27 school year!

Selected by a panel of his peers through the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, Aidan will serve as the student voice to the Board of Education, representing thousands of students across NLMUSD.

Entering his senior year at Southeast Academy, Aidan has already established an impressive record of leadership and service. He has served as a member of the John Glenn High School & Southeast Academy School Site Council, Representative on the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, Battalion Sergeant Major, Drill Commander, Commander of Troops, and Vice President of the Associated Student Body.

📚💰 This summer, every NLMUSD high school student will receive a free copy of How Not to Lose a Million Dollars by Dr. Sheila Bair as part of our Summer Literacy Program!

Dr. Bair is a nationally recognized financial expert, former Chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and a leading advocate for financial literacy. Earlier this spring, she spoke to more than 500 NLMUSD students about the importance of smart financial decision-making and preparing for life after high school.

The book covers practical topics that every young adult should know, including:

🏦 Opening a bank account
🚗 Buying your first car
💳 Avoiding debt
💵 Building financial stability
📈 Making smart money decisions

Families, we encourage you to read alongside your student and use the book as a starting point for important conversations about financial responsibility and future planning.

A special thank you to Norwalk High School Principal Dr. David Olea for helping share the message about this exciting opportunity to increase financial literacy across our District and empower students with skills that will benefit them long after graduation. 👏

If your student hasn’t received their copy, please contact your school site. 🌟

Middle school promotions may be over but the learning will continue all summer long!

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District is excited to launch its Summer Take-Home Books Program for middle school students in partnership with Scholastic, helping students stay engaged in reading throughout the summer.

Each middle school student will select and keep five books from a collection of 30 high-interest titles chosen to spark curiosity, encourage independent reading, and support literacy growth. The program is designed to promote the joy of reading, giving students the freedom to explore books that match their interests.

Families are encouraged to make reading part of their summer routine and take advantage of free resources available through the Norwalk and La Mirada public libraries.

NLMUSD extends a special thank you to Romina Franco, Norwalk High School Class of 2026, for serving as the student spokesperson for this literacy initiative. Her leadership and commitment to academic excellence exemplify the opportunities that reading can create for students.

Through this program, NLMUSD is helping students build strong reading habits and foster a lifelong love of learning. 📚✨
