Victims of crime are often thought of solely as those directly involved with the defendant. However, individuals who are not immediately connected to the crime itself are frequently overlooked. These secondary victims can include first responders—EMTs, firefighters, and law enforcement officers—who bear emotional and psychological burdens from their involvement.

As this Office closes a case that deeply affected our community, we have been granted permission to share the attached Victim Impact Statement submitted by the Norwalk Police Department.

A sincere thank you to everyone who was involved in this case from the Norwalk Police Department, Iowa, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and finally to the community members who attempted to intervene prior to this senseless act.

The Police Department has received multiple reports of a scam going around our community. Residents are receiving phone calls appearing to be from the Warren County Sheriff's Office. The caller is telling the victims they missed a court date and that there is an outstanding warrant for their arrest. As a reminder, the Warren County Sheriff's Office will not call to notify you of any warrant or missed court appearance. They will also not request any sort of payment over the phone to take care of any issues.

You may always call our non-emergency dispatch at 515-222-3321 and ask to speak with a Norwalk Officer at any time if you receive a questionable phone call like this.

It has been one year since we lost our friend and brother, Officer Jayson Spurr, to a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. The impact he had on the lives of the residents, students of the NCSD, and the Norwalk community will always be cherished and remembered. His legacy and spirit of selfless service towards others continues to live on.
