WATER RESCUE
Norwalk Fire Department Marine Unit 229 responded to a distressed kayaker whose paddle had broken, leaving him unable to control the kayak in the strong tidal current. The kayaker was without a life vest. MU 229 quickly and safely brought the kayaker back to shore.

Norwalk Fire Department remains ready to respond whenever we're needed on land or on the water.

Simultaneous Residential Fires
West Norwalk Rd. and Midrocks Dr.
Tuesday, July 21, 2026

The City of Norwalk Fire Department responded to two nearly simultaneous residential structure fires on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

At approximately 12:46 p.m., the department was dispatched to West Norwalk Road for a report of smoke inside a residence and a possible fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an active fire in the basement of a two-and-a-half-story, single-family home and declared a working fire.

The first-alarm assignment extinguished the fire and declared it under control approximately 55 minutes after firefighters arrived. The Norwalk Fire Department responded with 27 firefighters, including three engine companies, two ladder companies, one rescue company, and command and support staff.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.

Before resources had cleared the West Norwalk Road incident, Norwalk Combined Dispatch received a report of a second house fire on Midrocks Drive at approximately 1:29 p.m.

Because companies were still operating at the first fire, the initial response to Midrocks Drive consisted of two available Norwalk engine companies, command staff, and an engine company from the New Canaan Fire Department.

Upon arrival, Engine 4 encountered fire showing from the first floor and heavy smoke throughout the two-and-a-half-story, single-family home. Engine 4 declared a working fire, bringing additional resources to the scene as companies became available from the first incident.

The fire was extinguished by the first-alarm assignment and declared under control approximately 35 minutes after firefighters arrived.

The Norwalk Fire Department responded with 27 firefighters, including three engine companies, one ladder company, one rescue company, and command and support staff. The New Canaan Fire Department also responded with one engine company and support personnel.

There were no reported injuries to civilians. One firefighter sustained a minor hand injury and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Norwalk Hospital EMS and the Norwalk Police Department provided on-scene support at both incidents. The Rowayton Fire Department provided station coverage while Norwalk companies operated at the fires.

The Norwalk Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of both fires.

The City of Norwalk Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 115 Stuart Avenue at approximately 10:14 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

Norwalk Combined Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a house fire with the possibility of occupants still inside the residence.

Upon arrival, first-due companies encountered heavy fire in the rear of the 1½-story single-family residence with fire extending into both floors of the home. Radiant heat from the fire also ignited a detached garage and caused damage to the siding of a neighboring home.

Due to the volume of fire and the exposure hazard, second and third alarms were quickly transmitted, bringing all five Norwalk engine companies to the scene. Firefighters stretched multiple handlines to both floors of the residence and to the exterior to protect the exposure. Crews simultaneously conducted primary and secondary searches, ventilated the structure both horizontally and vertically, and secured the utilities. The bulk of the fire was brought under control within approximately 20 minutes.

Fortunately, no occupants were inside the residence at the time of the fire. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.

The residence was undergoing renovations and was unoccupied; therefore, no residents were displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Norwalk Fire Marshal’s Division.

🚒⚠️ Generator Safety During Power Outages ⚠️🚒

Power outages can happen unexpectedly, and portable generators can provide essential backup power—but they must be used safely.

🚒The Norwalk Fire Department reminds all residents to follow these important safety tips:

✅ Always operate generators outdoors—never inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.

✅ Keep generators away from doors, windows, and vents, with the exhaust directed away from your home to help prevent carbon monoxide (CO) from entering the building.

✅ Install working carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas. Test them regularly and replace batteries as needed.

✅ Never plug a generator directly into a household outlet. This dangerous practice, known as "backfeeding," can seriously injure utility workers and damage your home's electrical system. Use heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cords or a properly installed transfer switch.

✅ Allow the generator to cool before refueling. Gasoline spilled on hot engine parts can ignite and cause a fire.

✅ Keep the generator dry. Operate it on a dry surface and protect it from rain using a manufacturer-approved cover or an open canopy that allows adequate ventilation.

✅ Store fuel safely in approved containers and away from your home and other ignition sources.

A few simple precautions can prevent fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, and serious injuries. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay safe during power outages.

If you experience symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning—including headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, or confusion—move to fresh air immediately and call 911.

⚠️ STORM SAFETY REMINDER: DOWNED POWER LINES & TREES ⚠️
As you begin cleaning up after the storm, please use extreme caution around downed trees and power lines.
🔴 Always assume every downed power line is LIVE and dangerous.
For your safety:
⚡ Stay away from downed power lines, damaged trees, fences, puddles, and anything that may be in contact with a wire.
🌳 Never attempt to cut or remove trees or branches that are touching power lines.
🚧 Do not drive over or walk near downed wires. Turn around and find another route.
🚗 If a power line falls on your vehicle, remain inside if it is safe to do so and call 911. Exit only if there is an immediate life-threatening emergency, such as a fire.
📞 Report all downed power lines and trees creating an immediate hazard by calling 911.
As crews work to restore power and clear roadways, please be patient and give first responders and utility workers plenty of room to work safely.
Your awareness can help prevent serious injuries and save lives.

The City of Norwalk Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire on South Main Street at approximately 10:33 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

Engine 5, Engine 2, Engine 3, Truck 2, Truck 1, Rescue 2, and Car 2 responded to the incident. Upon arrival, Engine 5 reported smoke and fire showing from the rear and side of a three-story wood-frame multi-family dwelling.

Engine 5 arrived within four minutes of dispatch, quickly located the seat of the fire, and stretched a hose line to the rear apartment. Firefighters rapidly brought the fire under control, confining it to the kitchen and dining area of the apartment. Smoke and water damage extended throughout the affected unit.

Members of Truck 2 and Rescue 2 conducted primary searches of all floors of the building, confirming that no occupants remained inside. Truck 1 assisted with utility control, ventilation, and inspection of the roof structure for fire extension. Truck 2 performed overhaul operations. Engine 2 established a water supply from a nearby hydrant and stretched a backup hose line to the fire floor. Engine 3 was assigned as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). Gas and electrical utilities were secured, and the building was thoroughly ventilated. Atmospheric monitoring was conducted to ensure the structure was free of hazardous products of combustion prior to reoccupancy.

Norwalk EMS was on scene to provide firefighter rehabilitation services, while the Norwalk Police Department assisted with traffic and crowd control.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. During search operations, members of Rescue 2 located a cat inside the fire apartment and removed it from the building. Despite those efforts, the animal had succumbed to smoke inhalation and was returned to its owner.

The fire displaced two occupants, who received assistance from the American Red Cross. Occupants of the remaining three apartments were able to return to their homes.

Fire Department operations were completed at 11:48 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Norwalk Fire Marshal's Division.
