Southeastern Connecticut Housing Alliance

Southeastern Connecticut Housing Alliance Affordable Housing Advocacy Services to create affordable housing in Southeastern CT

The Southeastern Connecticut Housing Alliance had its genesis in a Blue Ribbon Panel for Housing that rose out of the 2002 study commissioned by the Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments and others that showed a region in crisis with respect to affordable housing. "Housing a Region in Transition" demonstrated a regional need for approximately 5,000 new housing units from 2000 to 2005. As

a successor to the Blue Ribbon panel, SECHA was incorporated in 2006 to facilitate a regional approach to help deal with the shortage of affordable housing.

The Southeastern Connecticut Housing Alliance (SECHA) partnered with the Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments and the Eastern Connecticut Association of REALTORS® to offer an achievable housing bus tour last Friday. The tour visited several successful housing projects in the Southeastern Connecticut region including: 1) A Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut site in the Greenville neighborhood of Norwich, which now houses 10 families in single-family homes; 2) A historic mill rehabilitation site in Montville where Dakota Partners is transforming the former Faria Beede Instruments factory into a mix of low- to moderate- income and market rate units; 3) A Southeastern Connecticut Community Land Trust home in New London; 4) A New London Homeless Hospitality Center site on Friendship Street in New London, which provides shared-housing arrangements in two brand new modular duplexes; and 5) A brand new mixed-income apartment building on Bayonet Street in New London, developed by Eastern Connecticut Housing Opportunities, Inc. The bus tour concluded with lunch at Bayonet Street's Community Room where Nandini Natarajan, CEO of Connecticut Housing Finance Authority talked to attendees about the construction of affordable housing throughout the state.

Thank you to Dime Bank and Eastern Connecticut Association of REALTORS® for sponsoring this successful event!

Opportunity to tour new affordable housing in New London next Saturday, September 18th!

On Saturday, September 18 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., we'll be showcasing HOPE's work with a free walking tour from one end of Belden Street to the other. It's our first walking tour since the pandemic began!

For decades, HOPE has been preserving houses along Belden Street while creating affordable owner-occupied homes. We're so impressed with their work that we've honored their executive director Marilyn Graham with not one but two lifetime achievement awards.

Tour guide Don Presley will explain this 19th-century street's history as well as the history of individual houses. Marilyn Graham will explain what HOPE does and how they came to be involved with Belden Street.

No need to purchase tickets or rsvp. Just show up!

Parking will be available for tour attendees behind Jan Electronics at 6 Truman Street. From the parking lot, walk down Belden Court and turn left onto Belden Street. The tour will start at the vacant lot at the end of the street on your left

For the safety of Don, Marilyn and our attendees, we'll be requiring face masks. (We'll have some on hand for folks who forget theirs.)

We are grateful to our program sponsors Ace Hardware and Fiddleheads Food Co-op. New London Landmarks' work is supported by a grant from the Connecticut Department of Econonic Development's State Historic Preservation Office.

"Many people don’t realize that the person living next door to you would qualify for affordable housing. The person who serves you dinner qualifies for affordable housing. The person who treats your children, the nurse at your pediatrician’s office, qualifies for affordable housing. Your recent college grad, your own child, would qualify for affordable housing."- Julie Savin, ECHO, in new video from Liberty Bank

Applications are now being accepted for apartments at The Lofts at Spencer's Corner in Essex! Now through December 5th.

Thank you to the employees of Dime Bank for their "Jeans Day" donations to SECHA.

Happy Friday!

Today we are wearing our blue jeans in support of the Southeastern Connecticut Housing Alliance.đź‘–

Their mission was incorporated in 2006 as an advocacy organization, dedicated to promoting affordable housing in southeastern Connecticut. SECHA took the place of the Blue Ribbon Panel for Housing, which was formed following a 2002 study of housing needs in the region.

Each Friday we wear our jeans to raise funds for local nonprofit groups and organizations. Keep an eye out for our next jeans day recipient on February 28!
