2024 is turning out to indeed be a year of new beginnings both for me and the downtown! Four years ago, Bruce Becker suggested that we contact the new owner of the Wauregan about the Reid & Hughes building, across the street from the Wauregan (and my second floor apartment there). We did, and in May of 2021, there was a tour of the building with city officials, members of Norwich Heritage Trust, and David McCarthy, who is now developing the building! To see this sign go up today, and the evidence of the ongoing work sent me into transports of joy!

Interior designer Ingrid Bergman brought this room back to a 19th century appearance close to what it looked like in Civil War Governor Buckingham’s day. Many items associated with Buckingham remain in the house, including this bust. The rifled artillery shell on the mantel was the gift of the Connecticut troops that captured Ft. Pulaski, GA. The governor used it as a door stop!

Norwich historian Frances Manwaring Caulkins described the Confederate prison at Andersonville, Georgia, as “that loathsome abode of lingering torture.” One young Norwich man imprisoned there wrote home, “At times, I fancy I hear the church bells in Norwich.” After the war, the city of Norwich made arrangements to recover the remains of local soldiers who had died at Andersonville. They were reinterred at Yantic Cemetery, and are part of the innermost ring of the Soldiers Circle there. More graves were added later as veterans died in the post-war era.

Join us for a talk by authors Bill Liska and Kim Perlotto this Thursday, May 16th, 7 pm, Room 335, Norwich City Hall, 100 Broadway, Norwich CT.
